The Abyss would be so much better without the aliens. Everything that is great about it - the interaction of the crew, the crane fall, the single-suit conundrum, the long sink to the nuclear warhead - is related to combatting technical issues or war-mongering paranoia. The aliens are just kind of... pointless and ruin the ending.

I'm delighted by how much I liked Late Spring considering my somewhat tepid response to Tokyo Story. I just found it a lot more emotionally stirring, but I owe TS a rewatch.

Welcome Kenji. Ozu is probably my biggest blind spot in film. Haven't seen a single movie of his.

It kinda worked for me in a "who-knows-what-the-hell-else-is-down there?" kinda way. So I know they're aliens, but some think the ocean world is the real wondrous one rather than the one over our heads.

It's a bit like The Day the Earth Stood still in that it's got Aliens who come with a warning, although that ultimatum emerges a bit implausibly and suddenly at the very end.

But I definitely get where you're coming from.

To Tran's point, it just complicates an uncomplicated synopsis. BUt I think to Cameron, that's exactly what he didn't want to have. (a simple synopsis)

There's always 2 or 3 storylines in his films.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

I watched the theatrical cut, and it's just.... oh, the aliens saved him and revealed themselves and... the end, I guess? The director's cut is just hectoring.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) - "My mum and dad... are both dead from the neck up." Karel Reisz' crisp, vital direction of this excellent kitchen-sink drama is in match with his lead's fiercely self-destructive streak, but it's Albert Finney who's the whole show here. He manages from scene one to modulate his live-wire belligerence against the world as defiance towards that quote's sentiment, where he fears a monotonous, grindingly working-class life if he's not able to get out or finds someone to understand it with. An electrifying debut screen performance. 8.5/10

I have a hard time getting excited about movies from the 30s. Despite hearing nothing but good things, I am crestfallen to discover that my next movie being shipped from Netflix is The Awful Truth. What decades/genres, if any, do you have a hard time with?

Is there a decade worse than the 30s? I guess that's when sound got started, so it was a whole new technological approach that had to be addressed. The Great Depression obviously slowed things down too.

The Awful Truth is fairly mediocre, but McCarey's Make Way for Tomorrow and Love Affair are both great.

George Cukor's Holiday, and My Man Godfrey with Powell and Lombard are both top notch.

Every decade after the 1970s. Incidentally, the '30s may be the greatest decade ever for Japanese movies.

    Some recommendations for '30s films:

80s horror is this incredible little Petrie dish of amazingness that never happened before and will never happen again.

I do always seem to yearn for the visuals of late silents like Metropolis, Sunrise, Man with the Movie Camera, etc. Hard to do that on early sound stages.

I have trouble sometimes with silent cinema just because I am so used to sound.

    I'll turn to a friend

I hate to say "you're watching the wrong movies," because it reads all sorts of wrong, but, my dude, you're watching the wrong movies.

There are a bunch of actors and directors who worked the decade and made great stuff but somehow they aren't as popular as they used to be. Go into their filmographies, pick a random title, and you'll likely get a good watch:

    - Joan Blondell
    - Paul Muni
    - Norma Shearer
    - Anna Mae Wong
    - WC Fields
    - Mervyn LeRoy
    - Joseph von Sternberg
    - The Marx Brothers

    Especially:

    - I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
    - Scarface
    - Shanghai Express
    - Three on a Match
    - The Barber Shop
    - The Women
    - Gold Diggers of 1933
    - Duck Soup
    - Destry Rides Again

I dont know what it is specifically … but the 70s have a terrible look to everything, like you're looking through a screen door. Whatever technology was used during that decade, doesn't translate well for cinema. I'm thinking of movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, The Conversation, Marathon Man...everything looks dirty... Sure there are exceptions like Alien, Solaris... but for the most part I just generally don't gravitate to this decade.

There's a big difference between the movies before '34 or so and after. Not a big fan of The Awful Truth. How about M or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

The graininess of certain '70s movies results from using fast film stocks in low lighting conditions. The movies are supposed to look that way to give an impression of documentary realism.
