Due to the Barnes and Noble Criterion sale, we grabbed up Ride the Pink Horse, Certain Women, Hiroshima mon Amour, and Picnic at Hanging Rock (the first two were blind buys). As we were watching special features on Weir's Picnic, Sarah wondered what are other fundamentally unsolved mystery films like Picnic, L'Avventura, Zodiac, and The Vanishing, as they're one of her favorite sub-genres. Thoughts on others to pursue?
My favorite is Memories of Murder, but I assume you've both seen that?

I suppose Haneke's Caché can apply here, too. I'd argue the mystery is solved by the closing credits, but the "answer" is never explicitly stated so there is some ambiguity.
Giving up in 2020. Who cares.

Wait, I got it. Missing, by Costa-Gavras. That one rocked me to the core of my being.

I like still having the physical media.
I still buy the occasional VHS. Couple weeks ago picked up Hearts of Darkness and Casablanca in pristine condition. Certain movies it just feels right.

Damn I wish I'd thought of that.

Yeah, doubt I'll do physical media as well, except video games since I just return them for credit.

I can't even remember the last time I played a DVD, and those were the heaviest boxes to move.

I suppose I can't say I'll never buy another physical media again. I did of course buy this in February.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

    Excalibur.

Weird movie. Kinda great, often terrible, sometimes dull but also never dull. I think I loved it.

Metacritic listed their most acclaimed filmmakers of the 21st century. It wasn't just a bunch of white dudes.

Enchanted (2007) - Amy Adams is so good that she cuts through the film's pedestrian lensing/editing* and from-a-mile-away plot points** and invigorates the story. The script helps; it allows patience and time for the cartoon characters to adapt to life in New York, to the point that I actually believed it when Rafe Spall turncoated on Sarandon's evil stepmother. This is essential, too, because for the first leg of their journey, Adams and Marsden are so chipper that they verge into insufferable. But by the time they're sharing a thoughtful moment on a bridge, Marsden with a foam Statue of Liberty crown on his head, I realized how carefully they'd modulated their performances to get to that point.

    * Just the usual Hollywood stuff. Shallow depth of field, cutting on each new line of dialogue from actors. I got distracted by one scene where Dempsey and his daughter were standing next to each other, her holding onto him, and the film was still cutting from a medium close-up of him to a medium close-up of her. Just keep them in the same damn shot!

**I was really hoping the film would juke the expectation of pairing off all available singles, but the film finally feels like a Disney universe that features a New York City instead of a real world with a few invading cartoons. So it's hard to blame them.

Thought I might use Pixar's Day and Night as an introduction to a science unit for the seven year olds I'm teaching but watching it, it's pretty gross and pervy. A pity. Feels like something out of the 50s.

Yeah, I think you're making the right choice. Seven-year-olds don't need to see yet another cute cartoon character being a total randy perv-dude. It's difficult to believe (and simultaneously, totally not difficult to believe) this was played in front of Toy Story 3 just seven years ago.

It's got some cool animation and a neat overall theme. But man.

I was curious about the reaction upon Toy Story 3's release, and it was nothing but praise. I think it's one of Pixar's weakest short. It's not LAVA bad though.

I can't remember the last Pixar/Disney short to wow me. Maybe Presto?
    Sure why not?

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson) - 9
STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (Sean Baker) - 9
LADY BIRD (Greta Gerwig) - 8

Anyone check out The Void? It's almost a good movie. Really killer practical effects.

Just watched it yesterday. Really liked it. Not perfect, but I'll take a swing over same old, same old.

Totally. It was just on the cusp of being good, but I totally appreciate the effort and what they were going for.

Which the Void are we talking about here? There's 4 or 5 made in the last 10 years according to IMBD.

Entirely useless thing I discovered today, Roger Deakins was the cinematographer on Alex Cox's 1986 Sid & Nancy.

Watching a lot of fantasy and taking notes in case I decide to make a montage of fantasy films (still not sure yet), but one thing that is interesting is that fantasy films have so far been somewhat limited in terms of story types. So many of the male-centered ones are fundamentally Arthurian, so many of the female-centered ones are twists on Alice in Wonderland. Once noticed, it feels obvious, given the popularity of those two stories in Western literature, but it's still interesting.

Speaking of fantasy movies, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is fantastic. Such goodness.
