Only heard Suburbs (which I liked), but I really don't care for the little I've heard of The National. Is their new album considerably better, or should I probably not bother?
Yeah, if you didn't like they're earlier stuff, I don't see this album winning you over. But here's my favorite track for your consideration...

my top ten of the year is something like:

    High Violet (The National)
    Teen Dream (Beach House)
    The Archandroid (Janelle Monae)
    This is Happening (LCD Soundsystem)
    The Suburbs (Arcade Fire)
Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Return of Chico Dusty (Big Boi)
    False Priest (Of Montreal)
Have One On Me (Joanna Newsom)
The Age of Adz (Sufjan Stevens)
    Body Talk (Robyn)

i fully expect the new kanye to work its way in there. and the titus andronicus and walkmen records would round out a top 12.

All this love for High Violet pleases me greatly.

I wanted to also say a few words about the new Arcade Fire. The album as whole was an epic disappointment for me. With the exception of a few tracks, namely Empty Room and Sprawl II, which are top-notch, the album is a lackluster performance by them, especially when compared to the colorfully inspired and morbidly awesome High Violet and other superb indie having come out this year (see lists above for more on this). It's too laden with that awful polished pop-cheese sound Ă* la WILCO at their most annoying levels. (I like WILCO but I when they pull that shit I get furious.) Funeral will stand the test of time but I feel like Suburbs is destined to fade out and end up in one of those discount bins you see in record stores (internet sarcasm flag). It's not bad but it's just not very good either. Right. Now I feel better about that. **exhales**

i've heard around 75 albums this year. probably 30 of them i thought were really good. the stuff that's on my list i really love. it's a nice change for last year when i was struggling to find ten solid albums. (and now, looking back at my list from last year only the top three would have any chance of gracing this year's list)

Any Justice fans out there? You should check out the Skrillex EP, Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites. Some really fun stuff.

Oh god oh god, I'm slowly beginning to hate everyone who doesn't listen to any kind of rap on a regular basis who comes up to me and says that Eminem is "the bestest one," because he "raps about life shit 'n shit."

What they are inferring is that he's the bestest one because he's white.

It makes it a little harder for us pasty white guys who can actually hold our own in a cypher - the number of times I've been called "Slim Shady;" man, that gets on my nerves.

I like Eminem, but I listen to 90s gangster rap and Jay-Z on a regular basis. I've also gotten into Immortal Technique - his song Dance With The Devil is good but flat-out haunting. Also heard some of Kanye's new album and I'm glad to hear that he's back to rapping and away from autotune.

Excellent call, would make my list. A couple of years and moments still feel fresh. Shame about the follow-up.

    30 spots too low.

Some interesting picks and a nice list overall, but I really couldn't get into your number one and don't really find Sigur Ros listworthy.

I liked Yesterday and Today fine, barring the interminable last track. In fact, his version of "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" may be my favorite by him, "Everday" willing.

I've been a huge fan of Donuts since it was recommended to me here at MC right around its release (and Jay's passing) in early 2006, and it's been a great joy to watch it gain popularity in the music world. I especially love how it has influenced so many recent artists, as I initially thought it would likely turn out to be the only thing of its kind. Now to see how long it takes to become a cliche. Regardless, I feel a sort of allegiance to the record and am very pleased by your high opinion of it.

Not a big fan of that remix. (On my crap laptop speakers) it doesn't seem to fully utilize the original's maximal shoegaze quality, which is what I love most about that specific M83 album.

Any witch house fans around here? I've been obsessed with the genre's poppier offerings, but the creepier, Knife-aping stuff can be cool as well.

oOoOOO is off and on, but "Hearts" and especially "NoSummr4u" are some of my most listened to cuts this year. "NoSummr4u" sounds like The Knife's "Heartbeats" with Lil Wayne beats, and is a hit on every recent mixtape I've made.

Balam Acab's See Birds EP is hands down my favorite witch house record. The first two cuts are the darkest (i.e. most witch house-y) and therefore get the most attention, but the thing is remarkably elating overall. With slow, monstrous beats, combinations of hazy and precise synths, and reverby chipmunk vocals, it can be damn near triumphant at times.

It may turn out to be a passing trend, but I imagine a lot of potential for this genre.

Not sure if any of you really pay attention to my free music thread, but I know there are quite a few Deerhunter fans here, so I'll cross post this here:

Deerhunter fans, all of Atlas Sound's (the lead singer's solo project) Bedroom Databank albums (Vol. 1-4) are available for free download from the Free Music Archive. Some pretty good stuff on these.

I picked up Lyrics Born's newest album, it's better then his last one but still not great. His new direction just isn't good. He was much better being innovative with djing, but now his I need to have a live band behind me and sing even though I'm a bad singer is really grating on me.

The instrumentation and singing just seemed like too much of a self-assured stretch. It ultimately just sounded really annoying to me.
