I recently re-watched The Cure in Orange.

Man, what a brilliant concert that is. The Cure in top form. Amazing selection of songs, all played very well.

That's cool. Reminds me a bit of the stuff Tim Exile does. Very nice.

Jeez. This has not been a good week.

Speaking of Beck, I've been listening to Odelay a lot lately. What would people here say is the better Dust Brothers production, this album or Paul's Boutique?
I haven't heard either of those, unfortunately. I'm working on it, I swear!

Dire Straights' Making Movies is truly awesome, The Clash's Combat Rock is pretty good (although a tad disappointing), and Incubus' Morning View is in some ways better than Make Yourself, although the two are fairly equal. I'm trying to becoming a harder grader of albums, although with the **** scale that's a bit tougher. Up next: The Clash Live at Shea Standium, Drive By Truckers, Neko Case's latest, and finally Joy Division's first album, which will be listened to in conjunction with Control.

Oh and I bought Contra, the new CD from Vampire Weekend, so I'm going to give that a spin and let you all know what I think. I truly loved their self title first CD, so I have sizable expectations for this one.

I can't stop listening to Endtroducing but I'm new to the DJ only side of hip hop. Can someone recommend some similar stuff to listen to?

Wow. Starting with Endtroducing? That sets a pretty tough standard.

Anyway, I've heard Cut Chemist is pretty good. You might wanna check his stuff out. Kid Koala has a fun album called All My Best Friends Are DJs as well. OH! Mix Master Mike has an awesome album out called Bangzilla.

And then, you should get the game DJ Hero.

Anyone here listen to Tim Exile's The Listening Tree?

Easily my favorite commercial album of 2009. It's pretty amazing how he is elevating electronic music to a whole new level, putting a focus on live performance with the dexterity of a great guitar player or drummer. He could very well be a new Briano Eno or Robert Fripp, in that he thinks about music, composition, and performance on an entirely different level than most other musicians.

Here is performing and demonstrating one of his live set ups:

This track is called "Family Galaxy"- listen to the way the rhythm organically changes throughout the track. And the way Exile uses the vocals to add to the rhythm. It's dang awesome.

It's really one of those game changing albums, although that may be more true for other electronic musicians. He may be more of a musician's musician, or something.

Here is doing a live remix of an Obama speech - kind of fun.

These guys' music is kind of interesting, if a little unintentionally ragged. Check 'em out.

Tony Gerber, a long-time staple in the CC ambient music community, just had his house broken into and tons of his one of a kind musical instruments and recording computers stolen. Tony is a guy who has given away thousands of hours of his art for free - releasing albums and performing live in Second Life - and some scum bag (really the only term appropriate for a thief) robs him of his hobby. This is upsetting to me at a very personal level.

The Clash: Live at Shea Stadium, The Drive By Trucker's "A Blessing and a Curse," and Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures are all truly great albums. What a fantastic run of CD listening I've had over the past couple of weeks, really. Plus, my local library had the copy of "Pleasures" which contained Division's live material as a bonus disc, which is also fantastic-I wish I could have had the chance to hear the band in person. I can't wait to check out Neko Case's Middle Cyclone, either. After that I'm not sure what I will grab from my public library-but they have a fairly sizable and good music collection.

I like both of these a lot. Have you listened to anything else by the Truckers? Brighter Than Creation's Dark is my favorite. Such a great album.

I remember feeling the same way when thieves broke into BTs studio and stole 150K worth of his equipment. What a frickin' lousy thing to do to another human being.

Nope. But my public library has one or two CD(s) from them that I plan on listening to. I can't remember the names.

So....Kayne's latest album, 808s & Heartbreak, is actually some kind of 80s pop/R & B style guilty pleasure. Certainly its better than his disappointing previous effort, Graduation. I find it strangely enjoyable, and I'm not really sure why.

Also with The Essential Songs of Leonard Cohen, and the Songs of Leonard Cohen, I'm diving into someone who I keep hearing great things about.

Certainly it's not. 808 relies WAAAY too much on the vocoder, which gets old and annoying really fast. I thought it was pure crap whereas Graduation showed a bit more creativity. Plus, it samples Can's "Sing Swan Song".

Which vocal style sucks more: Metal "scary voice" or Vocoder "robot voice"? Vote now!

I will accept other submissions of vocal styles that suck.

love 808s and heartbreaks. one of my favorite albums of 08

and it's not vocoder, it's autotuned. vocoder sounds different and is also awesome
