Looks hilarious and stupid and probably fun.

That would seem to tell me that Vin Diesel really does run that show. And he is petty.

"Ballers" had The Rock's character making jokes about Vin Diesel around the time the story broke. That's not a good sign. I'm not surprised Rock won't be back.

Well I guess it's good the Rock and Jason Statham have their own franchise now.

John Cena should stick to hosting daytime TV.

What was the beef between Vin and Dwayne about, anyways?

Was it really just Vin being jealous that Dwayne was getting his own movie? And feeling like it was a betrayal?

As I recall it was 1. arguing about who should win in their punch-fest and 2. Vin has a very casual attitude towards showing up on set when hes good and ready even if he keeps everyone waiting.

Makes it sound like Vin is kind of a diva and the more petty of the two.

Which is sad. I always liked him, largely due to thinking he was supposed to be a pretty nice, normal guy.

    That is, afaik, fairly standard.

Guys like Arnold and Sly had similar clauses in their contracts before they had enough clout for script & director approval.

I was going to say the same. It got a huge publicity in the WSJ this week though.

No doubt. It's a fun story. But I was surprised people were making fun of these guys, as if dudes like Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise don't have "can't lose" clauses in their contracts.

Yeah, this is long standing stuff, but feels a bit different than a "can't lose" clause. The idea of counting punches landed, making sure The Rock never lays flat on his back, etc. is inordinately silly.

It feels like it's worked for his career though. He's never once not played the Alpha .

In everyday terms, it's absolutely silly.

But then I think, if that shit wasn't in there these guys would inevitably be fucked over by some producer or studio. These sorta of clauses are similar to the ones that cover sex scenes, where every movement and kiss, every second of sideboob and butt, is in the contract.

I can't blame agents / managers for obsessively protecting macho personas. At the end of the day, it's all someone like The Rock has. His career requires an absurd level of hyper-masculinity. If he ever looked genuinely weak or foolish, his career could be over.

This is also why someone like Cruise appearing in "Tropic Thunder" or Harrison Ford appearing in "Morning Glory" as they did is really kinda remarkable --- and rare.
