The Element of Crime. The entire movie you feel like you're in a toilet bowl surrounded by shit.

I'm looking for lists of movies where characters getting really dirty -- as in covered with mud
Apart from the "dirty" qualifier, not sure of the types of films your audiences are looking for. If they don't mind an older, family-suitable comedy, there's the 1963 John Wayne - Maureen O'Hara western comedy, McLintock!, that contains a fairly famous and iconic scene involving virtually the entire town in a fist fight in a "mud bowl" in which every character (cowboys, straight-laced upstanding citizens, ladies in frilly gowns, etc) is caked head-to-toe in mud to the point of being almost unrecognizable. G-rated and 127 minutes. One caveat to keep in mind: as a product of its time, it's not the most PC film around w/scenes of Wayne spanking his wife, etc. Still, as a farce, it's quite energetic and funny. Might be interesting to see how younger audiences today would receive it.

My first thought was the custard scene in Young Adam, but that film is so flippin' bad.

Oh man, I just thought of the #1 dirtiest film I've ever seen.

    Organ

This flick will make you want to take a bath in boiling hot water.

And it looks like the director's newest one, ID, is also pretty dirty.

If they don't mind an older, family-suitable comedy, there's the 1963 John Waye - Maureen O'Hara western comedy, McLintock!, that contains a fairly famous and iconic scene involving virtually the entire town in a fist fight in a "mud bowl" in which every character (cowboys, straight-laced upstanding citizens, ladies in frilly gowns, etc) is caked head-to-toe in mud to the point of being almost unrecognizable. That is actually a great suggestion. Keep in mind that our series shows in Bismarck, ND -- a rather conservative town although our series tends to bring out just about every liberal minded person within 30 miles. We have people from teenagers through people in their 80s. Good diversity is a good idea and at least one classic like a John Wayne film is almost a must. I'd love to show Dead Alive, but it may be too extreme for our audience.

I tabulate the audience comments and wow did we get torn apart in the past for showing things like Bad Education, The Piano Teacher, and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days. It can be a fine line to tread trying to put together a series that is interesting and worthwhile that also makes money and keeps the audience coming back.

    Oh yes, good one.

I've been thinking about Matewan, mostly because I'd like an excuse to see it again. I've never seen Days of Heaven. Does anyone get dirty in that?

Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life - The restuarant scene where Mr. Creosote blows up real good; lots of scenes of patrons covered with vomit and/or guts.

1941 - Spielberg's film has a running gag about Treat William's hatred of eggs, ending in a chase scene in which he is covered with..eggs.

There's a very funny scene in Tapeheads in which a Swedish synthpop band is covered in paint and pillow feathers while filming a video of Devo's "Baby Doll." At least I think it's funny. No one else seems to think so.

I haven't seen it yet. (Another big screen opportunity?) Describe the "dirty" imagery a bit.
Benny nailed it. But it is over two hours.

Also, the most iconic one (also over two hours). Shawshank Redemption
