12 Films Eligible for Best Animated Feature Oscar

    Ratatouille
    Bee Movie
    Shrek the Third
    Surf's Up
    The Simpsons Movie
    Beowulf
    Alvin and the Chipmunks
    Meet the Robinsons
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
    TMNT
    Tekkonkinkreet
    Persepolis

    Link

So, with all due respect to Tekkonkinkreet, which I'm sure is wonderful, I don't see how this possibly goes to any film but Ratatouille.

It's the only film up there that stands a chance, really. Persepolis will get to the final nominees, I'd bet, but it certainly won't win.

Pity Sony released Paprika last year to try to win an Oscar it didn't have a chance at. It'd do better this year.

Of the listed, I've only seen that, Surf's Up (which I liked a little bit more) and Aqua Teen Hunger Force (which doesn't deserve any awards ever).

I think the dark horse is Persepolis, which seems to be a critics darling right now. But you're probably right, it's probably Ratatouille's already.

You liked Surf's Up more than Ratatouille? Ugh, I thought it was dreadful. Not as bad as Bee Movie, but just really blah.

Yeah, I'd give it a chance if critics voted on this award. But they don't.

No, but sometimes the academy is swayed by that "little movie that could", which usually comes from the critical reception.

Hard to tell how many they will nominate, but my guess is that these are the top 5.

Those are pretty much all the animated movies that came out this year anyway. The animated Oscar is a joke. Why don't they raise the nominations to five?
    Sure why not?

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson) - 9
STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (Sean Baker) - 9
LADY BIRD (Greta Gerwig) - 8

If the award was based entirely on the artistry of the animation, Tekkonkinkreet might deserve it. As a movie though, nah.

Maybe because that would mean nominating almost half of the eligible films.

Yeah. I kind of put them both on the same level of bland, harmless fodder, but Surf's Up had a muse played by Jeff Bridges playing the ukulele. Ratatouille's muse was that annoying guy from Everybody Loves Raymond. And I was more frustrated by Ratatouille's preachiness and world logic and hubris.

Shrek the Third will be nominated. It won't win, but there's no way it isn't getting a nomination.

    Ratatouille
    Shrek the Third
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
    TMNT

Are the only ones I've seen. Out of that group Ratatouille is the best, hands down. The ATHF movie was a guilty pleasure of mine. TMNT was disappointingly medocre, and Shrek the Third was so bland I don't even remember what happened in it. I (sadly) still need to see The Simpsons Movie and I may view Meet the Robinsons, Beowolf and Bee Movie on DVD.

Maybe we're being too quick to dismiss Alvin and the Chipmunks. We don't know. It could be really innovative and artistic and moving.

It totally deserves it. It is a fantastic film. But it won't win. The award will go to Pixar.

Ehh, I don't think so. It tries way too hard for so little.

I disagree. It is brilliant, full of solid characterizations, great symbolism, and a powerful, mature narrative. It's the best 2007 released film I've seen this year. I think it is a masterpiece of the medium.

The only film I've seen for the first time this year that I like better is Mind Game.

I kind of felt this way about Mind Game. Others seem to have had a transcendent experience, but I found that very little of the actual substance of the film moved me. The animation is a treat though.

Great symbolism? The movie is so crammed to the edges of every other frame with blatant symbolism, it's borderline ridiculous. I mean c'mon, making the older brother wear a yin-yang jacket while giving him stigmata wounds on his hands? The narrative feels like an entire manga series downsized into a two hour film, and the visuals are far too elaborate, so that it goes from being impressive and immersive to just kinda annoying, as you don't even know where to direct your vision half the time.

I didn't say subtle symbolism. There is a time and place for subtlety, just as there is a time and place for bombast, and Tekkonkinkreet, like the manga, takes the bombastic approach and benefits greatly from it.

I think these two films impact people who are on a certain wavelength. I just happen to be on this wavelength. In no way do I think they have wide appeal, which is why Tekkonkinkreet does not stand a chance of winning, I'll be surprised if it is even picked as an actual nomination.

Call me crazy or ignorant, but I sort of didn't like any of those. In terms of the quality of animation I'd definitely go for Ratatouille, but otherwise, I really wouldn't know which one to chose. Animated movies are just not what they used to be when I was a kid, they seem to have lost their soul over the course of years. Or maybe I'm just getting older, who knows.
China Moon (John Bailey, 1994) (2/5)
Lions for Lambs (Robert Redford, 2007) (1/5)
Gone Baby Gone (Ben Affleck, 2007) (4/5)
Shoot 'em Up (Michael Davis, 2007) (3.5/5)
    Waitress (Adrienne Shelly, 2007) (4/5)
    Hairspray (Adam Shankman, 2007) (4.5/5)
He Was a Quiet Man (Frank Cappello, 2007) (4/5)
    Bobby (Emilio Estevez, 2006) (3/5)
Across the Universe (Julie Taymor, 2007) (3.5/5)
I Know Who Killed Me (Chris Sivertson, 2007) (2/5)
