This probably belongs in the book forum, but I'll get more answers here.

I have a sister who just turned 13 and is a freshman right now. I'm looking to buy her some good books for Christmas about being a teenager and female empowerment. They can be fiction or nonfiction. They can't be vulgar or anything.

    Any suggestions?
    Sure why not?

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (Rian Johnson) - 9
STRONGER (David Gordon Green) - 6
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco) - 7
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (Sean Baker) - 9
LADY BIRD (Greta Gerwig) - 8

I was in the audience for this in Bulgaria on Friday night... it was absolutely magical.

I wish I could see the whole trilogy this way, but it's sadly beyond my reach... any of you guys should definitely do it when it comes to the Lincoln Center in NY in April: http://lc.lincolncenter.org/shows/21...-08%2019:30:00, especially if you're a fan of the films and especially the music.

Just about anything from Catherynne M. Valente. One of the strongest, most unique feminine voices in genre literature today. Her prose style is complex but immensely readable, she deals with complex themes, and she speaks to both a younger and older reader. She's tremendous.

The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden. It's a series of nested stories in the vein of Arabian Nights. Really beautifully written and narratively rewarding.
    last four:
    black widow - 8
    zero dark thirty - 9
    the muse - 7
    freaky - 7

    now reading:

Her book The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making was the best book I've read so far this year. It might skew a little young for 13, but I liked it at 35, so...

    Some other recs:

Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
Quest for a Maid by Frances Mary Hendry
    Beauty by Robin McKinley

These are all (to some extent) fantasy stories, well-written, age-appropriate, with strong female characters. Dealing with Dragons is a comedy.
    ...and the milk's in me.

These would be my recs as well. Nice thing about Valente is that your sister can grow with her. She's pretty prolific, and writes things for most age groups.

I didn't realize she writes YA stuff. The one I read opens with a young girl banging an old man on a bullet train.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Th Girl etc. is middle grade (10-14 years old or so.) It's more of a fairy tale than anything.

I am involved in A Thing at work and boy oh boy do I wish I wasn't. I think my boss is actually being written up for something that got all mixed up during my transition into my new job. She has said it isn't my fault and another department has it out for her, but I'm trying so hard to put my best foot forward and develop positive relationships and... in my experience when you are close to A Thing its stink gets all over you.

And it is kind of my fault because I "corrected" someone with bad information which exposed the original miscommunication/mistake. Eughhhhhh.

Aaaand it won't die. I just got multiple e-mails on the subject.

BY THE WAY this whole debacle came from an assumption that I am supposed to work 8 hours a day, AKA a totally normal amount, when I guess I was hired for 7.5. Therefore I have a week where I was barbarously overworked for 2.5 hours. THE HORROR.

There are pluses and minuses to being hourly. I've actually never been salaried at a job... maybe someday.

My #1 celeb crush was right behind me at Starbucks and I was literally shaking and I said I just wanted to tell her she's great as Britta and I briefly forgot her name like an idiot and when I said I didn't want a selfie or anything silly like that she insisted and someday I'll marry this woman.

There was no time for hover hand.

Also, she had to show me how to flip to the front camera on an iPhone.

Everything I've heard about her makes her seem super cool. She went to the same high school as some of my friends, but was slightly older than them.
