Anyone think they’re waiting to see how this goes before finalizing The Batman?
I like the idea that they are planning to reboot Batman from here.
I think the same. Reeves has probably been ready for a long time but Affleck's resignation and the negative reception of other DCEU movies are weighing in.
What I don't get is why are the producers so worried. Suicide Squad is a piece of shit but it still made A LOT of money.
Idris Elba joins
Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney will return to the team.

Bronze Tiger?
Do you see what DC is doing? They are quietly rebuilding their universe. Aquaman gets a sequel. Now Shazam! gets one confirmed. Wonder Woman has one coming. Tie in Batman and a potential Superman movie down the road and you have yourself a justice league. All you really need is a Flashpoint in the middle of this stuff where you can Days of Future past the old crap and come out on the other side looking good.
Well yeah. At the same time the fact that their original universe plans failed gives them a bit more leeway to experiment with stuff like this Joker movie.
I know you're a franchise fan, but seriously fuck all that. The biggest advantage Warners has is that these are one-offs requiring nothing from the audience.
Warners is also gun shy about embracing or re-embracing big, obvious failures. (Remember "Green Lantern?") So I think they might take a beat before they push another epic Batman or Supes film.
(Or maybe not. AT&T is desperate for ever-more dollars and wants to wring every last penny out of their new media toy.)
This is what DC and AT&T do every day:
They wake up, turn on the coffee, go to their computer, logon to www.boxofficemojo.com and refresh whatever Marvel movie is currently in theaters, and stare at the nine zeros in 7 (soon to be 8) of the 22 films they have put out over the last 10 years.
It's inevitable.
The funny thing is, do you know what SHOULD be BETTER than the Avengers? []. Someone over AT&T just needs to watch their own product (Justice League: The New Frontier) and adapt that shit. The blueprint is fucking there. Except they are so scared about being a bunch of 70 and 80 year old white guys watching a cartoon that is for KIDs they will never understand what they have.
I'm not saying Warners will never do it, just that they'd be smart to hold off.
Every major studio has tried to imitate Marvel's model and most of em have failed or stalled. (Hell, even LucasFillm fucked it up, and with a property that's far more popular than Marvel comics ever were.)
Because fans might accept a ceaseless parade of tentpoles but they'll balk at too-much-too-soon sequels and back-to-back reboots.
That said, I think you nailed it --- Warners' biggest problem is that they don't know the value of what they own and they have no idea what they do well.
Yeh you're probably right about holding off. But everyday, when they do their daily 'how much is Marvel making today?" check... they will ask each other: "Should we... should we do it NOW?"
BTW: I was super disappointed at how little Marvel stuff I saw in Disney stores in FL.
DC can’t even seem to get their tent pole character right.
If they want to emulate Marvel’s success, they need to emulate Marvel’s process. Make good standalone features, get people invested in the characters. Pitch perfect casting, a unique and easily identifiable tone in both scripts and direction, a balance of weight and fun.
I loved Nolan’s Batman films but WB/DC seemed to think an entire universe with that grim feel was what people wanted. They couldn’t have been more wrong. And when they tried to “change” with Justice League, it felt forced and insincere.
Find a good Superman. Make a good Superman movie.
Find a good Batman. Make a good Batman movie.
Then unite them with Wonder Woman for a Trinity movie.
Then make some more stand alone individual stories for them. Bring in a Flash movie or a Green Lantern movie.
WB seems to forget that we are entering PHASE FOUR of Marvel movies. It was 4 years of standalone before we got a team up. Then another 3 years of standalones and introducing more characters before another team up.
SLOW THE HELL DOWN
this isn't sustainable. the superhero craze is going to die sooner than later. I think Endgame will start the decline honestly — it will be impossible to top. DC might actually be the ones to kill it.
I predict AT LEAST another decade of superhero stuff being successful and in the spotlight.
And that’s being ultra conservative.
It won't die because there's nothing to replace it.
Superhero movies are action blockbusters for a new age. Instead of Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans headlining "The Last Boy Scout," we get Robert Downey Jr and Don Cheadle in "Iron Man 3."
Action movies will never go away because they play to the medium's basic strengths (ie, violence is both dramatic and kinetic) and general audiences love them.
I was thinking about Duke & Duke's love of Nolan and this is my WB dream strategy:
- Don't say another word about Batman
- Wait until Christian Bale gets past 50 (so ~6 years from now)
- Give Nolan another 3 picture deal and carte blanche
- Hire Joaquin Phoenix to reprise The Joker and cast Tom Hardy as the Mutant leader
- Do a hard adaptation of Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns"
something will come along and replace it.
