Rumors are swirling, swirling! Perhaps it'll remain a rumor, and perhaps you Star Wars geeks should prepare your precious childhood memories for another rogering.

FUCK. OFF.
Ah. These must be those "smaller, more artistic" projects Lucas was talking about.

Let it die.
I'd be horrified if these happened and were written/directed by Lucas.
But I'd be lying if I said that thing about Coppolla and Spielberg didn't perk my ears up a bit.
Yeah, I'd put money down that you'll never see Coppola or Spielberg going anyhwere NEAR the Star Wars movies. I can only imagine the holy hell of working under Lucas's watch.
They would say: "No, George, that's your universe. You own that. We can never just come in. We would just be asking you how we should do it. No, if there's going to be more, you should be the one making them. No one can deny that."
They would think: "Like fucking balls I'm putting my name anywhere near that doomed fucking shitship."
I love how even Verizon and Motorola had to pay Lucas for the rights to call their new flagship phone the "Droid".
I'm all for it, much to no ones surprise. But I'll believe it when I see it.
more rumors a year later...
No real news... just that they are planning to do it after the Star Wars reRelease in 3D.
This is a dumb idea. It would also test my continuing refusal to give George Lucus any more of my money. Its why I'm not going to ever buy the Star Wars movies on DVD. He can fuck off.

George Lucas is plotting to create new Star Wars movies at the ultra top-secret Skywalker Ranch. This is deja vu of the mid '90s when Uncle George start[ed] tweaking the Holy Trilogy to gear up for the Special Editions. [...] These new film will have nothing to do with the live action television series currently in development. That show already has over 50 scripts ready to go and plenty of pre-production time and money has been spent on artwork and storyboards. Once that show goes into production, Lucasfilm hopes to be able to produce at least 100 episodes since that is the threshold for syndication in the United States [...Fans] can expect the new trilogy after the entire saga is released in 3D which is expected to be complete around 2015 or 2016.
I'm still hoping they go with the idea of Han and Leia's children finding a new planet at the end of the universe, colonizing it and calling it "Earth".
Now that is clever writing!!
As long as he gives us plenty of scenes with space committees and treaty embargoes, I'll be happy.
