So basically we're a year or so away from Her being real.
Are those prototypes or retail ready?
Either way, they're suuuuuuper fucking creepy. Given the recent news about these companies "accidentally" capturing audio, who would pay $$$ to walk around with an always on location tracker and surveillance device?
Aside from Duke, I mean. ;)
I mean Google did this a few years ago with their glasses prototype.
I asked for an invite, but I don't expect to be using these things. Of course I'm going to try it though.
Eh, not really. Amazon is just more in your face about it.
Yeah, what?
The difference is in intent, which is huuuuuuge.
Cell phones were not originally designed to be mass surveillance devices. They can be with a limited scope, but mostly that's confined to state actors. Amazon's devices are designed to surveil, to collect and send data and to one of the country's biggest retailers.
When I meet up with friends, I'm not worried about my privacy simply because we're all carrying cell phones. But if I met up with a group and somebody was wearing one of these AMZN devices, I'd be creeped out. They turn their users into de facto narcs.
Google Glass had the same issue, which largely why it didn't fly outside the Valley. Nobody wants a camera trained on them or a microphone in their face during casual social interactions.
Good HL2 reference.
I have always been on that side of the fence, but things are starting to push me in the other direction. I highly doubt I would use these products.
