Was the probe launched in the 1960's? Why are they not using color?!
Edit: okay, apparently better pictures are forthcoming.
My brain hurts.

I guess this belongs here. Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner will attempt a freefall jump from 12000 ft tomorrow, tuesday october 9th, to be the first person to smash through the sound barrier. I'm not sure the above site has the live footage, but it is the official site of the event.
That should be 120k feet. This is the guy whose record they're trying to break, when he jumped from 108k.
Joe Kittinger was a supreme badass.

That's so funny. I just finished a book this morning that included an interview with him looking forward to this jump, which they predicted would happen in 2012 and I wondered if it had happened yet. SYNERGY.
The book, by the way, was Packing for Mars by Mary Roach. It was pretty good.
Is this happening or not? :)
Forget it: looks like weather is deteriorating once again.
Not. canceled due to wind.
He's on his way up now. Amazing.
The gauges on the site are a nice touch. I like seeing how it's -50 degrees outside. Freakin insane.
Go, Hot Dog, GO!!
sorry. couldn't help myself.
This is very exciting. Anyone know what kind of a view we'll get when he starts to fall, if any?
What link are you using?
Bummer. Good for him though.

That's gotta do wonders to the road.
Well it sure as hell did wonders on the tree line. Still, that is fairly bitchin'.
