Since this movie deals very much in metaphors, analogies and allegories, all I'll say is that it's stunning and essentially feels like The Road Warrior, Escape From New York, Southland Tales, and Spring Breakers all blended up into a smoothie with some colour-dyed whip cream and other visual sprinkles on top, dripping with condensation the second you're in the radiating heat of the movie's setting. You either go with it early on and drink it up fast while it's still cool, or keep your distance and wait 'til it's too late, letting it all melt into a warm, watery mess you should've jumped on earlier. (But you'll also know pretty early on if it's for you or not, and maybe you're simply allergic.)
I have some issues with it, but my biggest complaint being it's simply not perfect undersells just how much it doesn't hold back, and how engaging and uniquely thrilling it is at its very best.
It also flaunts a new, snazzy, neon Annapurna Pictures logo at the beginning, which I asked Amirpour about in the lobby after the movie and she said was made just for this. As much as I like their usual, scramble-y VHS one, I kinda think they should stick with it.
Wants to be a "Mad Max" directed by Jodorowsky. That, in itself, almost makes it worthy of a watch, except that it's trying so dang hard, that it's frustrating.
There's some very fun visuals here that would make for a good party scene, such as the LSD trip, wanders through the desert landscapes, and some Neon Demon-like approaches to it. However, it's approach to story is muddled, with quite terrible characters, and a theme that is eyeroll worthy.
I wonder what Momoa's actual voice is now.
It also suffers in a way that Refn suffers in his movies, in that it becomes too in love with its visuals, that it hangs on to some of them for so long that it becomes boring at times.
Plenty of potential here.
I guess this can be moved/merged with Ezee's thread in 2017 subforum? Even though it is just me alone talking about it *gulp* a year ago.
In which a sexy double amputee attempts to rescue the child of a sexy cannibal by infiltrating an army of sexy pregnant women ...
This kind of lost me towards the end, but Amirpour is clearly a gutsy, singular artist. I'll see anything she does.
I thought this was all kinds of engrossing and awesome and a vast improvement over A Girl... Aminpour is a director to watch. She excels at atmosphere and that might annoy some audiences because they perceive it as done at the expense of substance, but I respectfully disagree - the world building becomes the theme of the film here.
I like Keanu Reeves in a sort of ironic way but that role really should have been filled by a better actor. What Jim Carrey does here with the aid of make up, on the other hand, is incredible.
Apparently, her next project is a TV pilot for the USA network. Seems like a waste.
I think the reason for that is this one didn't do well with reviewers and audiences.
