As saccharine overload as the trailer is, I'm still looking forward to it considering it's Marielle Heller. Her career trajectory from The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me? to this has been weird though.
Also, from people who have been test-screened/read the script, apparently the trailer is misleading in that Rhys' character is the leading protagonist, while Hanks is playing a supporting role.
Here comes another Oscar nom for Hanks.
Hanks has rubbed the Academy the wrong way for some reason. He hasn't been nominated since 2001.
No nomination for Captain Phillips was a hell of a snub.
Saccharin as it may have been, I sure as hell got some goosebumps, and even a little misty eyed.
To be fair ... Hanks is always solid but he appears in too many mediocre movies. He always has.
In the years before hit his stride with "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump" he did a movie opposite a dog. Nowadays, for every "Captain Phillips" or "Bridge of Spies" he's doing shit like "Saving Mr Banks," "Hologram for the King," and "The Circle."
But then to his credit, most of his filmography is original work. He doesn't take flashy roles and he eschews bullshit character work (of the kind the Academy loves) unless he's doing a biopic, like this one.
Looks exceptionally dull. Never got Mr. Rodgers in NZ so the nostalgia is lost on me.
Having just watched the trailer, the intro bit almost looks like Hanks is about to riff Rogers rather than being him.
Schmaltzy, kind of like when he played Disney. I'll pass.
This looks like it will tell us everything the excellent documentary already did, albeit in a biopic. But I'm sure audiences will enjoy it.
I grew up watching Mr. Rogers so yes I will be seeing this.
I grew up watching Mr. Rogers and I won't be seeing this. (other than to complete Tom Hank's filmography at some point down the road).
I watched and enjoyed the doc last year.
Samuel L Jackson.
Yeah, no sane person would watch Sam Jackson's entire filmography. I love him but most of it is obviously crap.
Paul Newman is a good answer.
Poor Matthew Rhys, the lead getting ghosted from his own film https://awardswatch.com/forums/image...mileys/lol.gif, although I get that both the character and actor here are the absolute main selling point. Reaction from someone who has watched it and reacted to a comment asking how much Hanks is in the film and also to this poster/marketing:
Quote:
Hanks is actually in the movie a little more than I expected, but this is still disingenuous and probably will catch up to them if they keep it up. Especially since it’s not quite the crowdpleaser some are expecting. It’s a more quiet and sad movie.
