I find the idea that going to a sporting event makes you obligated to be mindlessly patriotic and flag-waving (regardless of the country you're in) to be pretty silly.

It should not be seen as disrespectful to anyone if you choose not to participate in that aspect of it.

Not if it isn't a competition that isn't international.

International wise, sure. But that's like rooting for your favorite team.

I don't dislike America by any means - I mean, I'm working my ass off to be able to live there.

I've been to a jillion sporting events and never heard anyone break out a U-S-A chant.

Also have no problem with saying your country is #1 so long as you respect the other countries around you at the same time. And people do tend to take that in the wrong way.

I'd probably just send random e-mails out to people in the US telling them I'll pay them money if they send me more money.

If you think a country is the greatest country in the world just because that's where you were born, that's not "having your reasons".

If I was a black man born in South Africa I would certainly not think it was the greatest country in the world. "I love oppression! White people are better than me...this is great!"

At sporting events where one side is American and the other is not, yes. At sporting events where both teams are American, never.

I didn't ignore it. I just don't think it showed why I need to respect anything. I'm pretty sure the players would still get that adrenaline if I was sitting down. And I'm pretty sure moments of silence can be observed while sitting.

Also, the fuss here is entirely with you. I don't care at all, about standing or the song. I'm just still confused as to why you think I need to respect you because you like to stand.

Well I don't live there nor would I ever travel there so I can't answer your questions. I was just using that country as a hyperbole example. Insert any country into my example and that's my point.

The wave is silly. It's a sign of boredom from fans who don't understand the game or when there's just nothing left to root for.
