Because from what I understand, even getting a work visa is, like, next to impossible these days.

You need to have sponsors (yes, plural), one of which being the employer who needs to provide ample evidence that they need YOU because the job couldn't be filled by an America. They also need to send regular reports on how you are doing, where you're living, how much you're being paid, etc.

There's a whole story about Evangeline Lilly (who is Canadian) who had soooo much trouble getting her work visa to work on Lost. It gets easier if the actor is "known," because then they can argue more effectively that having THAT PERSON in particular is important, but she was completely unknown. She only arrived a day or two before filming. They almost had to replace her.

I just don't know what to do...

To be honest, both Jen and I would much rather I moved there.

But it seems impossible.

So, yeah, Patrick and Kristen are pretty much instantly likable. As adorable a couple in person as they are in photos. We had a nice walk and chat from Powell's down to the Saturday Market and back (with my son tagging along and using the opportunity to turn the afternoon into a Friar's roast for me, much to our guests' delight). I pointed out a few goofy Portland landmarks and we mostly chatted about their move and new life in the Pacific Northwest. Kristen pressured my son into getting a tattoo. Patrick spoke of the merits of getting the Swedish take on the 80s hair-metal explosion. A delightful afternoon on a sunny Portland day.

My girlfriend lives in another country. She's finishing up with college, doesn't have a steady job, just like me. I'm a freelance graphic designer and it's been increasingly difficult finding work lately. We haven't seen each other since the beginning of the year.

We live in Seattle, but came down to Portland for the day. Just a few hours, but it was well worth it.

Spinal's kid recited an entire scene from the "Adventure Time" TV show for me. It was fantastic.

There are acceptable levels of crazy that we are prepared to permit...

Meg, your troubles remind me that often I've thought about moving to Canada. Simply because of the US government, although Obama getting elected sort of changed that. I'd at least like to visit, I guess.

Still haven't met anyone from online, yet. Someday, perhaps.
