No, I never said he hurts.
I just think the way he carries out his actions seem to be more selfishly driven than anything else.
Any celebrity who makes a big deal out of their own charitable actions, to me, cheapens the act they were carrying out in the first place.
But if they did it modestly and quietly, they wouldn't raise as much awareness for their cause.
Also, you said "all he's doing is exploiting both the issues and the people involved with the way he acts," which then makes sense why lovejuice would ask what he asked.
I don't think making a monetary donation to a charity requires the whole world knowing what you did.
Keanu Reeves donates enormous chunks of his salary from every film he does to charity, but he doesn't make it a big show. He just does it.
I find that much more noble of an act than "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! I'M AN ACTOR! GO SEE MY NEW MOVIE! *cough*here's some money for poor kids*cough*LOOK AT ME! I'M SUCH A GREAT PERSON!"
Turning it into a press extravaganza hopefully turns other people onto the cause, and they'll help feed even more children than Bono could by himself.
And then they'll go into coffee shops and mention in conversation that they totally help feed impoverished children, and obviously, they should have their lungs punctured for bragging so, worthless pieces of shit that they are. Amirite?
Well, let's take the example at hand - Bono.
He's always active in politics, but over the past 3-6 months, every couple of days he's doing some new interview with the papers, or magazines, or is on my e-mail news page for doing something public again. It's always him being outspoken about world issues, but it doesn't feel sincere at all when, "coincidentally", U2's new album just came out.
Like I said, I don't doubt that he has genuine concern regarding these issues, but this is a little slimey to me.
Meg, that is most alarming. Change your email homepage preferences or something right now to keep all celebrity news away from your eyes. That cannot be good for your health.
I don't mind Bono. I really don't see anything wrong with what he's doing, even if it is a bit overdone.
So, in your opinion, he is using the issue of world hunger or whatever to promote his album?
I guess I just look at it another way. That he is attempting to use the hype machine for a moral good.
And I think the basic point is, even if you're right and he does have sketchy motives, the weight of the good he is doing far outweighs our personal negative feelings about him being a little squirrely.
Bono has been doing this stuff for over 20 years. You mean to tell me that his visits with the president and many foreign representatives and his founding of charity organizations all correspond with U2 album releases? Really?
I think the Bono-is-an-insincere-narcissist line was played out in 1993.
This is the problem with the South Park mentality. For them, it is better to maintain this apathetic purity and not stand for something rather than risk being seen as someone who is earnest and passionate. I have no use for that philosophy.
Bono is a great humanitarian who uses his fame and wealth for the good of other people.
Who cares if he also benefits from it. He's a smart dude. He's also genuinely caring, and you can tell through a number of his artistic endeavors and his general attitude.
Are you saying that it is only truly good if his motives are completely altruistic? That's absolutely absurd.
Bono's also been involved in the creation of a few of the greatest rock albums of all time.
I have no time with Bono/U2 bashers.
***Edited for sounding mean***
:)
I have to agree that Bono's a good guy. He's done so much for poverty and AIDS, through donations and public exposure, that it's ridiculous. I don't believe that it's disingenuous either, seeing as how so much of U2's music has a world-peace-help-others-universal-love message to it.
Also, I'd include All That You Can't Leave Behind as a great album. "Walk On" might be my favorite U2 song.
