Oh, well. Solid effort.
Sycophant will not be happy.
Howard got the Golden Glove. Well deserved.
Kaka over Fabiano for the golden ball?
Its a damn shame that the US couldn't win, but still it was awesome that the US came close at least.
And I'll never understand the people who don't like sports. There's really a sport for every single person on this planet. The trick is simply to find the one you like best.
I thought sycophant didn't mind soccer.
Even 8 likes it.
Which is strange because I think soccer is a tough sport to film because you have to be so far back to film it. You sometimes can't see everything going on, whereas in nearly any other sport, you can get very close to the action.
That's honestly one of the reasons why I think Soccer has never been a top sport in the U.S.
Maybe, but on another point, that's also why it's so easy to manufacture movies out of those other sports. American football and baseball, especially, have a lot of moments of tension and build up, whether on the mound or on the charging line, which you can totally milk and mix with character development. Then you can have the inspirational touchdown run.
It's not really feasible with futbol because the game doesn't stop. It's a very reactionary, constantly moving sport. The players don't stand close enough to each other to have conversations, they're always running up and down, and unlike basket ball, you don't call time outs and shit. Even the goals happen suddenly and out of nowhere, so it's not very cinematic. The only tension you can get is from the penalty kicks, and that becomes trite fast.
I watched USA lose to Brazil 3-2 at the bar earlier. Great game...really thrilling to see the U.S. go up 2-0. Probably would have been the biggest achievement in contemporary soccer for the U.S. compounding it with the win against Spain, but perhaps for the best as the World Cup expectations would have been ridiculously unrealistic had we won.
"Didn't mind" is about the extent of it though.
Oh, well. I'm not feeling inclined to kvetch about it today. This is the World Cup, right? That only comes around, like, once a century or something, so you soccerheads enjoy. At least we're not discussing what models need to eat sammiches or whatever. All that talk has put things into perspective for me recently.
And while MadMan may be right about there being a sport even I could enjoy watching on a television screen and along with it a team I could swear loyalty to or something, I don't know why I'd bother with that pursuit. Nothing is immediately attractive to me and I've got enough hobbies and other things occupying my time, I don't have any desire to throw some unknown sport into the mix.
Though you guys should maybe have a soccer thread. Dunno.
I think there could be a good rivalry of sorts that would take place on the soccer field because the game is ongoing. A defender and forward that absolutely hate each other, and the moments in which they collide against each other would be very cinematic. It just hasn't been attempted really.
This might be my favorite "cinematic" soccer story, even if it is a commercial. It happens to end with a free kick.
A soccer thread would be hard to do because there's so many leagues and cups. Sycophant, the REAL World Cup is next year.
 Touche, good man. Touche. And it brings me to another point, which is that I never really bother to examine why I love sports so much in the first place.
Meh, that takes too much time, though. Go Cubs! :P
PS: The European Cup thread was really enlightening and great. I imagine a thread will be created for the World Cup when that rolls around.
When it comes to soccer, I don't have a heavy understanding of the game itself. The same goes for hockey. Even though I have actually played football (as the rest of the world calls it, of course) and enjoyed doing so.
