Oh certainly. But churches still seem to function largely as the backbones of American communities. Maybe it's different in other places, but that certainly seems to be the case everywhere I've lived.

And the shed thing was a pretty arbitrary choice--might just as well have been roofing work (which I've done) or sprinkler systems (also done) or furniture moving/repair or small bits of yardwork. My single mother got help from our ward to build a shed because we really kind of needed one, but I was too young to be of much help, she had a broken foot, the only of our local family who were still talking to us were old and feeble, and my mother's friends were too busy to help us. It was a good thing. It is a good thing.

It's always been my belief that a church's main responsibility to its community is to take care of the local needy, church-member or not (actually non-members and non-believers even more so). I've always been part of a church that offered food and clothing to the homeless and needy in some way or another. This is what tithes should be used for: to take care of the people who need help the most.

Give, give, give. Give until you can't give anymore, and then give a little bit more than that.

I'm suspicious of communities. Especially the kind ones.

People who do things out of sheer goodwill terrify me. I admire them from a distance, but if they're in my vicinity, I will recoil. Aaagh. Don't be so nice.

I like nice people.

You know what I don't miss about my experience in the church? It being a group of people who refused to apply rational thought and humility to their beliefs and judged others with condescension and pity, and when objections were raised to the practices of the church, such people were shunned and privately vilified by the more "esteemed" members, said esteem based on how close they were to the tabernacle during Sunday mass or how much they gave to the school.

Sorry. Bad experiences, I guess. But I have issues with any community united by their certainty in unprovable beliefs.

My shed sucks. But I have one, so I got that going for me.

My girlfriend just texted me and said it's over because I didn't ask her to do something this weekend.

I wanted to surprise her tomorrow with with a nice dinner, a trip to a ceramics place (she wants to be an artist), and then a movie.

The mere fact that she would end things with a text message tells me she's not worth any more of your time.

I say you consider it over, because this is very telling of her personality - if you stay with her, you will get further "drama" like this in the future.

I wouldn't be as fast as everyone else to say "End it, end it, end it," but if you do talk things out with her, you should say up front that you don't appreciate being manipulated and threatened.
