There are a dozen ways to get discount tickets for Broadway shows. At the very least, don't pay full price for anything but Spiderman, if you really want to assure good seats. Then, when you get there, you can go to the half-price ticket booth and find something fun.
In fact, I've seen some of the coolest productions that way. Things I wouldn't normally have seen, but the tickets were cheap.
Example: When I was in NYC with my grandmother eight years ago (just after 9/11, sadness) we ended up getting tickets to a one-man play called "Underneath the Lintel" starring Dan Hedaya. One of the most extraordinary theater-going experiences of my life. (And, really, I've seen a lot of plays.) The play was rebooted in 2007 in London starring Richard Schiff. And I missed it. Damn it.
