I was going to say, I've never had that problem with Amazon.ca. They always send me DVDs/books/whatever in snug, appropriately sized packaging.

Yep, they're estimating that Mrs. Gibson might get around $500 million in the divorce.
That's... a lot of money.
My grandmother always maintained that my grandfather was a good man to divorce... that he was better man about getting divorced than he was when he was trying to be a father or a husband. (He did gentlemanly things like mailing her checks for the utilities and bills in all the correct amounts and at the right times.)
My non-clinical view of the mentally ill OF THE DAY:
Axis I makes people ill.
Axis II makes people bitches.
Just got a craving for the shitty chocolate milk and taters tots that used to be served in my high school cafeteria.
Last night, my dog farted so bad that the smell woke me up.
I stayed home today to get some stuff done.
My horoscope says:
"Your affectionate feelings cause you to behave in a selfless manner. You will be an example of the loving compassion that is the most important of all human characteristics."
Since I have no intention of leaving the house today, I assume that you are all to be the beneficiaries of my magnanimity.
You're welcome in advance.
Tell me:
Why is environmentalism associated with the political left? Does it not seem that care for the natural world would be a pan-spectrum interest? Perhaps I'm being willfully naive, knowing as I do about the political right's friendliness toward corporate politics and religious ideals of man's role as supreme Earth being. Still, anyone?
I think you've targeted the most dominant reason, which is that the corporatizing of America--and, more extensively, the world--is often held partially culpable for the destruction of the earth. Create more power plants, churn out more gas-guzzling cars, suck up all of Maine's natural water to bottle high-selling Poland Spring beverages without much care for the surrounding land and inhabitants. Essentially, it can be attributed to a general lack of sensitivity in the face of gross (double-meaning word score!) profit.
It's all about money. If the right wing can try its hardest to delude themselves into believing that rapid climate change is natural, or that global warming doesn't exist, or that Jesus melted that iceberg so that we could drink from overflowing waters, then they will so they can feel comfortable living their chosen lifestyle.
How about the idea that stopping an industry harming the environment could also kill quite a few blue collar jobs?
It's kind of ridiculous how many things just kind of get swept up on either side of the political spectrum, so social liberals find themselves adopting economic liberalism and economic conservatives find themselves unthinkingly becoming social conservatives. There's actually room for practical latitude in the country and even within the parties, but it's rare.
On the subject of environmentalism, I see where a conservative outlook could prompt one to argue that the government has no place dictating environmental policy. But I don't think most people who oppose environmental measures actually reasoning through their beliefs like that.
And it's certainly one place I believe government should intervene.
Okay-- now-- I'm not one to endorse certain choices that Woody Allen has made in his personal life, but--

As I'm reading this, American Apparel stole images of Allen, used them in advertising without permission, and then when they are forced to take them down, they say he's a pervert who can't sell products.
I'm completely baffled.
It's a good point, actually. I would think that the issue itself is one that concern both sides, but it's the solution that's divisive, with the left usually leaning more towards regulations and government interference, whereas the right seem to favor... I dunno, letting nature and private sectors sort themselves out?
i'd rather be raped in my nostril, eyes and ears rather than listening or reading any about thailand politics. and yet, i keep checking out the newspaper. fuck my country! and fuck people there to hell!
Jesus, Barty. He wasn't even talking about Republicans.
It's this idea, I think, that somehow if we let factories govern themselves then we can trust them to make the best choices for the surrounding environment that really bothers me.
Barty, tell me: do you think that to be true? I know you're all "No regulation!" but do you think that Corporation, Inc. is going to, if given complete freedom to dispose of its waste however it wills, dispose of its waste properly? Do you think it would bother to spend money researching how to be both economic as well as environmental? I think you have more faith in the benevolence of large-scale money-driven endeavors than I do.
