Today’s discussion will be about waffles.
Can't remember the last time I had waffles, of any kind. So not a thing around here.
Crepes, pancakes yes, bigtime.
Haven't made crepes in years, I should remedy that. Pancakes, on the other hand, I found a mix loaded with protein that I use most weekends. Also works in the waffle iron. They’re called Kodiak Cakes, for anyone who is interested. Multiple flavors, but I stick with old fashioned buttermilk and doctor up the flavoring when I feel like it.
I now want waffles. And to go shooting again.
I’ve never had a crepe.
Nor have I ever had real waffles. Only, like, Eggos.
Not a damn thing wrong with Eggos. Had some this morning. Big fat real waffles are cool too.
Now I’ve got a hankering for chicken and waffles.
What's the advantage of waffles over pancakes?
They both operate as bland excuses for sugary toppings and condiments, but pancakes require less effort all around.
I have to find GF waffles because sigh, and lemme tell you: these waffles are freaking amazing if you can find them. They taste almost like Belgian waffles in consistency (tho not size). Honest. They are the shit.

Waffles are by far the most overrated thing on the planet. Pancakes all day everyday. Though we were just gifted a waffle maker for the wedding shower so I guess I got to use it now.
At their best, both have strengths and weaknesses. For me, waffle texture is more interesting and more pleasing in my mouth than pancakes. I feel like there's more going on and more to enjoy. Also, pancakes can feel very filling in an often unsatisfying way--like I've just gorged on pillows. Restaurants seem to make ever-increasingly giant pancakes when, like, one just about makes it impossible to enjoy the rest of your food. I love breakfast so much, and there's so much variety out there to enjoy. In that sense, waffles are also down the list for me....but still above pancakes.
Eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, potatoes, ham, biscuits, sausage gravy, bakery items...
Assuming we're gifted with ideal versions of each, all are superior to waffles/pancakes.
Oh, I’ll take a damn good omelet any time of day over waffles / pancakes.
Three / four eggs over easy on a pile of hash browns, with toast and bacon or sausage. The occasional homemade biscuits and gravy is good too.
Im ashamed to say I’ve never had grits.
Grits, done right, are a true thing of beauty. There are a couple places in The Twin Cities (Brasa and Revival come immediately to mind) who's grits are worth the trip alone. Do not, I repeat, do not, allow instant grits into your home.
To throw my two bits into the waffle debate - I prefer savory to sweet, so a breakfast for me is going to usually involve eggs if I have my way. Pancakes are great for camping when you need to feed a crowd with little to no fuss. As for waffles, I do have a waffle iron, I break it out only a few times a year, almost exclusively to make spiced apple waffles, quite possibly the perfect autumn breakfast dish.
Not sure what it is, but I don't care for omelets. Just too many eggs I guess.
Outside of poached eggs and a scrambled egg (done right), I've started to not care for eggs at all lately, which is weird.
I don't know why you're all acting like French toast isn't (a) a thing and (b) objectively better than pancakes or waffles.
French Toast, while great, is too dependent on the sweet side of things. Pancakes and Waffles can go in different territories, therefore, having a higher ranking in my book.
I like all these things.
2 eggs over medium, sausage links, hash browns w/hot sauce and ketchup, pancake or toast so sop up the eggs.
3 egg omelette with pork sausage, crab meat, shrimp, onion, green pepper, lots of cheese, and a line of cocktail sauce.
Deeeeeelish
