Well, for me at least the main draw of the MK games were the fatalities. That was what was fun about MK, plain and simple. If I wanted a deeper fighting experience, there were myriad other games which scratched that itch that I don't need to rattle off here.
You dumb down the fatalities in MK, all you're left with is a watered down Tekken-wannabe with freeze rays, harpoons and electricity. Well, actually, leave in those fatalities, and you're still left with a watered down Tekken-wannabe, but at least you can rip someone's spine out after you've beaten them, but it was those kickass fatalities that made me willing to overlook the game's other faults.
And now, Midway's decided to water down some of those fatalities to try for a lower rating and get some sales from the teenagers, giving old time MK loyalists the finger in the process. Okay, Midway, I can take a hint.
In the final analysis, it's not that big a deal that Midway did what they did. It's just that I have X amount of time with which to play games, and there are so many awesome games out there that it would take me X*10 hours to play them all. So, I gotta pick my games wisely. I'm not gonna waste my time on MK-With-Training-Wheels when just a few months of a wait will have Street Fighter 4 in all its glory in my hands.
From what I hear, and I am speaking as a non-fan of the series, the fighting engine and mechanics used in MKvDC are the most detailed and robust yet used in the series. For once, it is actually a great fighting game, and not a decent fighting game made more entertaining by the gore. I've also read that that game feels more like a bona fide 2D fighter, which is cool.
I see the lack of fatalities as a plus, and from what I gather by not relying on gimmicks the devs have actually stepped up the actual gameplay.
I'll try to check this out this weekend, and return with a report. I will report from the standpoint of a fighting game fan and not as a fan of MK.
This debate has made me curious about this game.

I checked the requirements for the PC version of L4D, and my system is woefully underqualified.
Damn it, when are PS3 owners going to get a good zombie game?! Resident Evil 5 doesn't count, shut up. :P
I finally watched the Resident Evil 5 trailer the other week. Man...not so sure about that one.
Heh, since we're on the subject of MK, I just came across this article on Digg.

Playing TQ now.
It's not a super-deuper gaming PC or anything, but it is quite a bit better than my old one.
Has anyone here tried Spore? Did it live up to the hype?
The image of a teenager putting a gun to his or her head and shooting never fails to be striking.
