The solution is easy: we need to stop talking about things that cause people to get angry and passionate.
Let's start a list of contraband topics:
1. Batman

A person can't control other people, what they can control is their response. Should I get all pissy and flustered because you're blaming me for Irish's leaving? By your logic above you owe me an apology for that type of comment.
But no, I'm not pissy nor do I want an apology because it's of no consequence. It's words on a page and I know the people here well enough not to take most remarks personally, even when they are meant that way.
People do actually apologize for things when they get way out of line (I have PM'd people in the past and they me) but most of the time things don't get that out of hand and in this instance I do not think in the slightest that I owe Irish an apology. My advice is grow a thicker skin.
You guys should PM each other apologies.
Wow. Things happened this morning.
That's ridiculous. This whole conversation is ridiculous. People leave internet sites. It happens. None of this is worth getting your feelings hurt or feeling tired and weary of posting. It's just a site. There's a million of them, not to mention more importantly there is real life. If you feel absolutely done with a website, then it's over. It was not for me to appeal to Irish beyond expressing I valued his posts and wished he would stay. He's not logging back in under that name. Whether he lurks is up to him, but he is done interacting.
Nonetheless to what I said above, it will get passionate and heated. It's an opinion website where people stay for long periods of time. Arguments happen. I wish people would stop using the barrier of the Internet to be assholish in ways they wouldn't be in real life, but that's the nature of the beast.
For the future of the community, it isn't about people leaving. That is inevitable. It's about replenishment.
No, not really. We never have had much influx. The people here now were here by-and-large seven years ago.
Sadly, it did very little I think. Most lurkers are looking at specific topics I would imagine and may not have even seen your thread. I think most of the unregistered viewers, outside the 95% of which are bots or crawlers, get here by way of a specific topic and not because they actually heard about us.Quote:
Did my appeal to lurkers thread DO NOTHING???
I'm saddened you feel that way, really. I don't look at it like that one bit. Even though you refer to MC as a "community" later in your post, you reduce to "just a site". It takes so much time to get to know people on the internet and feel comfortable posting somewhere. Time is valuable and therefor I will never reduce MC to "just a site". Where I spend my time is important to me. Of course there will be websites that are "just a site" but I doubt people here go to reedit to post relationship problems or ask for advice.... I doubt people go to RT to wish people a happy birthday or talk about Contemporary Moral Issues. I've known you guys for 8 years (roughly). It is a community and it is fun reflect on solid landmark discussions we had back in 2006. I am not an advocate of all good things must come to an end.
For the record, I am a bit perplexed at this picture that's being painted that Irish was a guy who simply held minority opinions and was harassed because of it.
Let's get some perspective here. He left after arguing about a TV episode's writing and his last post is telling someone "you know fuck all about story." In another thread, apropos of nothing, Irish responded to me talking about a show I just discovered by calling me a twelve year old. I wasn't offended by it, but the idea is that those talks happen on this site, and calling for people to apologize when there was no harsh name calling or personal attacks made, is positively absurd.
I'm with Raiders.
 Absolutely nothing. I was just joking and wanted to tease some innocent person who would suspect and deserve it the least. I'm a fan of ya Wats.
I don't think any one single person deserves the blame for Irish (or Meg) leaving, but MC posters have a tendency to either be so relentless with their arguments that it exhausts the opposing person, so dismissive of opinions that it exasperates others or hit below the belt when either one of those two things happens first. It's really a shame.
Oh dear god, YES! I have branched out a time or two when I go to Indian restaurants but I rarely get anything but this and tend to crave it at least once a week. Love.
Oddly enough, I did have a couple issues with "The Body" but I've never mentioned them. It is a great episode but definitely not perfect. :)
