Congratulations, Skitch!
Late to the party, but congratulations Skitch! Jen and I hope he's a happy, healthy little boy (and not too much of a hellion ;)).
Thanks everybody! He seems to be doing well. I hope the wife heals as expected and we can return home tomorrow. 6'2" me and my back are tired of the fetal position on this loveseat lol
I'm a little bit late to the discussion, but Joseph Conrad started writing novels at 36. So, there's a dude who started late.
Bukowski didn't start until he was in his 40s. Didn't get laid til he was 25 or so.
Raymond Chandler didn't start writing novels until he was 45.
People didn't give a shit about Van Gogh until after he's dead. So there's always that.
Meanwhile Kurt Corbin hit it big, couldn't stand the thought of selling out plus the pressures of being a huge star, and killed himself while still relatively young. So there is also that to consider.
Santa Barbara is such a beautiful town. My step-grandma bought me a sea otter stuffed hand puppet at the museum on the wharf because I am the spoiled.
YES I'M 32 YEARS OLD AND I LOVE MY HAND PUPPET.
I shall name him Otto.
Started my new job this week. It was a pay cut, but, damn, I am so much happier. I may not be on the site during the day nearly as much, however. I'm sure some of you are thankful. :P
Is there a "what is your day job" thread somewhere in this forum? I'd be curious.
A conversation I had with a coworker was, to me personally, quite frustrating and also a little disturbing. But you guys decide if I'm out of line in my concern:
I'll call the coworker "D" and me "B"...
D: I was getting a little concerned about my daughter's health the last few weeks.
B: Oh really? Is she all right? What's going on?
D: Well she's constantly fatigued, she gets painful headaches and finds much physical activity at all to be overwhelming.
B: Have you taken her to a doctor?
D: Yes a week ago. Our family doctor did some tests and said she's diabetic and has high blood pressure.
B: That sounds like it would fit the symptoms.
D: But then the other day I took her to my clairvoyant in Toronto, and he said there was a dead spot in her aura, in the center of her chest. He says she had a heart attack. So obviously my doctor has no fuckin' clue what he's doing - I've been seeing Uri for 10 years, and if he says she's had a heart attack, then that's what it is.
B: *dumbstruck*
Did many enjoyable touristy things in Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Lompoc. Saw several cousins and one uncle, but spent most of the time with my badass grandpa and step-grandmother.
You remember my grandpa, right? The one who beat away the Mission Canyon fire from his home using sheer stubbornness? I love that crazy old man.
Am now settled in Riverside County for a week with fantastic friends. This is the vacation part of my vacation.
I came so close to being a father these past three days that it was scary. It's ridiculous to me that a girl who's twenty-five and looks her age can't buy emergency contraception if she has no ID, or that the guy she's with can't buy it for her. Also that the prophylactics we hand on hand were ridiculously thin and flimsy, despite how they're advertised.
It was the biggest sigh of relief we'd ever experienced when she called me yesterday morning and told me she'd gotten her friend to buy it for her, and that she'd taken it about an hour before, within twelve hours of the "incident."
Nick of time .
Didn't we have a science thread? Or a NASA thread or something of the like?
When people say that nude photographs are "tastefully done", what do they mean? There seems to be an implied line of decorum that I'm not sure I understand completely. Where is this line drawn?
I feel like we just had this conversation a couple of weeks ago.
I think it boils down to intent and presentation.
For example, I think the Marilyn Monroe Playboy spread was tastefully done.
A photoshoot of, say, Sasha Grey is most likely not tasteful.
Then again, the meaning of the word "tasteful" is pretty subjective.
The funny thing about the discussion is I didn't mention that I semi-regularly go to a nude figure drawing class. Tastefully done tends to refer to interesting angles with changes to the color schemes or expression of emotions. Often with photography it can depend on the photographer and what sorts of exposures they use and how they instruct the model to portray themselves. It's not the finest of lines.
CAN I PLEASE JUST GET THROUGH ONE DAY WITHOUT SOMEONE MAKING A JEREMY LIN PUN.
