As for the game being unpleasant, it's in a league of its own allright. But is it more so than a particularly vicious season of walking dead? So far, no objections. It feels like a storytelling and word-building Milestone. Would have been even more so if it had been the first installment.

Morris, it's been fun to read your Last of Us 2 reactions now that the hype/backlash has dissipated. Most people who reacted negatively to the game primarily cite [

the manner in which Joel is killed and Abby's prominence as a playable character/Ellie's role as anti-hero

] as reasons why. IMO these criticisms are paradoxical: despite their personal shortcomings in the first game, Ellie and Joel came to be so dear to people's hearts they were less willing to give full authorship to Naughty Dog, who continued the story in a logical (if challenging) direction based on E&J's established character flaws. ND made such great characters that audiences felt as if they knew them and therefore had strong opinions about what their motivations ought to be (common criticisms include "MY Ellie wouldn't have done that," or "I'll never be able to forgive Abby for what she did," etc.), and we always want to believe the best about people we love. It's a boundary-pushing exercise in perspective -- in these games everyone does bad things to survive, yet we still side with the ones we know best.

I think it's a masterpiece, on par with the original. A bit too long though.

Joel did in the original so they can stay mad about what happened in Part II, and completely refuse to look at the overall story from another perspective, when that's the entire POINT of the game! "Let's go to an alternate universe, where the original Last Of Us features a doctor and his daughter in a post-apocalyptic world. The doctor's trying to do the right thing, but the world is decaying fast, and it's hard for him to recognize right from wrong. Then he finds a girl who's immune to the virus, but he realizes that he has to sacrifice her to save humanity. It's a tough choice, but he knows he has to do it because he's one of the last people alive who cares about saving mankind. But then, that girl's guardian kills the doctor, because people are selfish, and don't want to be saved. But then a few years later in this alternate universe, The Last Of Us Part II comes out, and we have to play as those other people, and the fans are saying "How DARE Naughty Dog make me play as these lunatics?! They were clearly the villains of the last game! Abbey's dad was the hero! These people killed him, and now they live in this peaceful country town, are you fucking kidding me?? Doom 2016 was maybe my favorite game that year. Freaking incredible.
