Damn, at my work place we would just say it. There's a high level of comfort between everyone.
Once someone left me a hand written note in my cube asking if I would stop wearing sandals into work. The note said it was unprofessional and the noise was distracting.
Keep in mind, I was a software engineer- we had programmers that came into work literally in pajama bottoms. I ddin't think there was anything wrong with me wearing jeans and sandals into work in the summer.
