Steeleye Span - Fighting for Strangers

Solid album and, of course, one of the all-time great album covers!

Listened to the new Arcade Fire for the first time last night. Now, I was disappointed with Neon Bible the first couple times before it really grew on me, so I'm trying to keep that in mind, but outside a few highlights I once again found this one disappointing. This was disappointing for different reasons. I just feels really... repetitive. I kind of got lost in the middle there and snapped back to at around track 14. I liked what I heard, I just wish it was a bit more distinct and varied. I'll give it a few more listens over the next couple days. Hopefully it progresses the way that Neon Bible did for me.
Stellarium, a recent discovery on Bandcamp.
Absolutely stunning. Neo-psyche, shoegazer, dirge, noise - pure brilliance.
Check out "Harbringer"

Mind blowing.
Another Stellarium track:
"Any Day is Fine"

Totally. I've been listening to it and trying to figure out what's so wrong with it. It's actually inspired me to write a review, which hasn't happened in, I don't know, forever (the heaps of glowing praise it's garnered also had something to do with it). I get the feeling from listening to it that the band had only a handful of really solid, inspired songs, but were under some kind of pressure from their label to release an album. That's probably not the case, but I don't know. That webcast yesterday (particularly the interview where they laughingly advised young bands to not take any money for anything in advance) didn't do much to change my opinion.
I copied the songs to a playlist, deleted a whole bunch of them, made the album just over 40 minutes long, and it plays like a classic. One solid song after another. I think it's just overstuffed. Should have cut a few songs, worked harder on the ones they kept.
Which ones did you ditch?
Having listened to the album about five times, I still have no recollection of the melodies etc of the following:
Empty Room
City with No Children
Half Light I
Half Light II
Suburban War
Wasted Hours
Deep Blue
We Used to Wait
That's a huge chunk of the album to be so bland.
Completely agree with Duncan. Here's my revised album, off the cuff. I haven't listened to it like this yet:
The Suburbs
Ready to Start
Rococo
Empty Room
Half Light I
Half Light II ( No Celebration)
Month of May
Wasted Hours
Deep Blue
Sprawl II
The Suburbs (continued)
The Suburbs
Rococo
Empty Room
Half Light I
Half Light II
Month of May
Wasted Hours
We Used to Wait
Sprawl I
Sprawl II
The Suburbs (continued)
The rest isn't exactly bad or anything, it just feels like more of the same.
The Suburbs
Half Light III (blue)
Half Light I
Half Light II
The Suburbs (overture)
Half Light IV (Love)
Sprawl VIII
Crown of Funerals
Sprawl I
Sprawl II
The 'burbs (Dante)
Sprawl XI (Hope)
The Suburbs (reprise)
In summary, I haven't heard this album yet but feel like I have.
________
Ginny Arnell - "Dumb Head"
Steve Reich is to rock climbing as music is to recreational activities.
12 years after it's release, Talvin Singh's Butterfly remains the most gorgeous & vibrant drum & bass song I have heard, ever.

John Foxx - Metal Beat

Hey Daniel, speaking of Mr. Foxx above (whose Metamatic album is an absolute classic), have you ever heard any of his really ambient stuff?
Listen to this incredibly gorgeous track from Cathedral Oceans:

OR, how about this collaboration with Harold Budd:

As much as I love the new Arcade Fire album, I agree that some tracks could have been cut. Or perhaps spun off into another album, or included as bonus tracks, maybe. I confess that part of my rating for it (***.5/****) is a result of me admiring its ambition.

The soundtrack from Velvet Goldmine is incredible!
Love Thom Yorke doing Bryan Ferry and Ewan Mcgregor doing Iggy Pop!
Just a Little Heat-The Black Keys. Badass rock/blues song with a nasty guitar riff.
Also I still think that Neon Bible is the best out of the three albums Arcade Fire has released. That's just me, though.
They were playing my favorite Midnight Oil song, Dead Heart, on the radio Saturday morning as I was driving to get my haircut.
Man, I can't believe how awesome this band was.
Wow - unbelievably good. Can't believe how amazing the quality of this video is. And that bass line!
