I wonder what theater purists think of the Tony Awards. Knowing nothing, I've been able to guess the winners of Play/Musical for quite a while, just based on what seems to be the one with the most publicity...
Course Spider-Man did that, but still...
I really do think it's strange that the Tonys are still on network television. I mean, I've spent most of my life doing theatre and I find them to be of little interest. I suppose if you're someone who likes to listen to Broadway cast recordings or someone who makes regular visits to New York to see plays, then I would see why you would care. But Broadway theatre is such a particular beast that it really has so little connection to the kind of theatre I know and love.
Local theatre is something I'd really like to get into, but I really have no idea where to start. Even the theatre nerds that I do talk with say that Denver's is incredibly weak.
Which makes sense based on the casting decisions I had to make when I did movies a while back. But still, I'm sure there's some good out there.
Billy Elliot is making the rounds at the Performing Arts complex, but that's all I know.
So I wrote down my impressions of the stage play version of The Room.

I need some advice from MatchCut.
There's a relatively new hire in Plumbing, which is located right next to my department (Appliances).
He's a black guy, and he's been pulling the race card quite a bit.
This was our exchange tonight:
HIM: Can you help me with an SOS* item here? (*SOS = "Special Order Sales")
ME: Yeah sure. Wait, I didn't think you guys did SOS stuff?
HIM: Whoa whoa whoa..."you guys"?
ME: Uh...yeah...plumbing...
HIM: Yeah, right.
And to clarify, he was not joking. He was quite bothered by my apparently racist use of "you guys".
How should I handle this (both the situation, and having to work with this guy)?
Is this something I should bring up with HR?
Never go straight to HR. That's going to only cause an uncomforatable feeling for everyone involved.
I'd rather try to understand his sensitivity, and be careful with words. If it's accused again, just ask your department manager (assuming you have one?) on what to do.
A few things I've learned:
- HR works for the corporation, not for you. They are not in your corner and never will be. They exist to limit corporate liability and that's about it. They will fuck you over in a heartbeat if need be.
- Get out in front of any confrontation. Your story, whatever it is, will have more credibility if the powers that be hear it before they hear the other guy's version.
- If you're friendly (ie, like you'd drink beers together) with your manager, consider throwing him a heads up about this.
- Best way is to confront the dude directly. In your most non threatening, non accusatory tone possible, next time he pulls this shit, stop whatever you're doing and say "Hey, do we have some kind of problem here?" and look him in the eye.
And document everything!
Meg's pretty racist though so I'm not surprised this guy picked up on it lurking deep beneath the benign comment.
