Ask Rowland. He's the Transporter expert.
The second one has some hilariously awful action scenes / FX.

I thought he had sex with that woman in the first film. Am I ignoring enormous signs that he's gay?
And Duke, there is no cut of the original film that includes the now-infamous "missile deflection." Which was the entire impetus for my friends and I going back in the day.

Leterrier said that he didn't want to make a generic Steven Seagal-esque action movie for his first American film, but he couldn't really change any of Besson's script, so instead he directed the whole movie with him being gay in mind. The idea was that The Transporter was closeted in the first movie (single, alone, nicely dressed, meticulous, French, rubbing oil on himself) and his one time sex with Shu Qi was the realization. He came out in the sequel when he rejected that woman and said something like, "I can't because of who I am."
I've always watched these movies this way and it's way more entertaining. It gives an entirely new context when that crazy Uzi woman licks him in the face and he looks really disgusted.

Huh. I had no idea...doesn't really change the flicks, but it gives them a nice little idiosyncrasy.

A helicopter explodes, the fire effects seem taken straight out of a Super Nintendo game. The original was never that wobbly in the FX department. I laughed.

How can it not be, with this kind of endorsement from the star?
Now, Corey directed the first Transporter; the second film was by Louis Leterrier (Incredible Hulk). In the third Transporter, you've got a new director, Olivier Megaton. How different has it been working from movie to movie with these different directors?
JS: think it's difficult, because this time the action sequences took on a bit of a different twist. Normally Corey Yuen gets to edit the sequences; because he creates them, he's responsible for the snip, snip, snip, and puts them together in his own musical way. But this time, Olivier - who's obviously the director - he wanted to give it a new twist, a fresh twist, and basically put them together in what he saw as the best way. It's only down to individual taste, really. I don't know whether it was better...I hope it was.
But Corey still choreographed the sequences?
JS: Yes, but usually if you choreograph it, you usually edit it, too. But you know, Olivier has a very certain style of filmmaking, and it's very stylistic and cool; I think he's done a great job. But it is very different to the previous two. A lot faster; doesn't have the silky-smooth feel. A little bit of timing was lost. But at the same time, some people like that; it's a little more contemporary. It's all about flavor, it's all about what you like.
Smells like awesome to me.

I urge everyone to check out AW's review (http://www.nypress.com/article-19048-transcendent-thrill-drive.html)on the horribly redesigned NYPress website. It's stunning. Here's a taste:
When Megaton makes Godardian symbolism of Martin’s hand retrieving a key from Valentina’s, Transporter 3 evinces greater art than Van Sant’s studied poetic effects.

I'm convinced AW doesn't actually believe the shit he writes, and just tries to sound like as much of a hipster art-douche as he can, so as to add even more convolution to the number of times he writes that he hates hipster art-douches.

He's the douche. The hipster artsy type deserves far more credit than they receive with every passing Armond White review.

Meh.
There are moments when Megaton seems to know what he's doing and delivers some energetic and visually arresting action, but those moments are extremely brief. Largely, it's par for the course, entirely conventional in its modern studio action film sensibilities. A step down from the first two, definitely.
Also, Frank was more interesting when he was 'the gay.'

Fun enough and easily a few notches above the second one thanks to special effects that actually get the job done and solid villain duties by Prison Break's Robert Knepper.

Exactly.
While I thought the film sucked (sadly), I found it an improvement on the other two. The scenario gave it a little more "wit" room than the others had.

While I thought the film sucked (sadly), I found it an improvement on the other two. The scenario gave it a little more "wit" room than the others had.Meh. I thought the others were clearly better made in sheer aesthetic terms, as well as the imagination involved in the choreography (Yuen clearly phoned this shit in), and this entry had the most downtime, as Statham bonds with the anorexic European chick for far more downtime than the previous two entries allowed. Furthermore, such obvious elements as the color scheme (why so serious?) and the editing (avid farts!) all take away from the picture. Compared to the first two, it's just so... generic. The bicycle chase rocks though, as does how he saves his car from sinking to the bottom of the river.
