"The most explicit sex, and talk about sex, ever seen in a historical drama"? Why is that a good thing?

Well, it doesn't sound bad, right?

I wanted to see this badly and missed it at the Buenos Aires Film Festival, along with two other movies with Asia Argento, explicit sex, and talk about sex.

I just can't get no satisfaction.

The first half of this film is pretty great, and then it just kinda gets stuck in a rut. Still worth seeing for Asia.

I can't even remember how long I've been looking forward to this one. Feels like about two years.

I always keep checking the news for the story telling me that Asia is allergic to cotton and synthetic clothes fibers. If she touches them for more than ten minutes, she breaks out in hives.

And yet she has overcome her disability in order to bring joy to millions. I think an Honorary Oscar is in order.

I've seen this movie. I honestly don't recall the sex being all that explicit, but maybe I'm just desensitized. In fact, that's very likely.

But there is a scene where Miss Argento licks an open gunshot wound.

And that's not even counting the viewers!

Not surprisingly, I thought this was pretty great. I don't think you have to be a Breillat die hard to enjoy it. However, it is another chapter in her career-long story of the pain men and women inflict upon each other. Excellent performances all around and, characteristically, sex scenes that are not so much provocative as they are frank. I sort of see what Boner is saying about the second half, but I think Breillat is intentionally steering clear of a clear cut climax in order to leave the viewer with a deep, lingering melancholy. It worked for me.

Finally saw this. It had moments in the middle where I really felt like it was going somewhere. Some big showdown with Asia and the blonde actress who plays the main gentleman's wife. But it never really happens. I generally like unconventional endings (like No Country or Paranoid Park) but this is a case where I felt like a better, climactic ending was in order.

Could someone cue me in to what the blonde wife did at the end? I thought:
She had an abortion to get back at her husband for screwing around with Asia at her place? Or did she have a miscarriage? Or was it something else entirely? It was never really explained but the doctor seemed to have old school abortion tools with him when he was working between her legs.

Also, this is simultaneously the most accessible and most conventional of Brelliat's films that I've seen (Romance, Fat Girl, and Sex is Comedy) which is both good and bad. I was sort of expecting some crazy ending like Fat Girl, which while a bit ludicrous, was certainly memorable.

I should also mention this is Argento's best performance that I've seen out of her. She's quite magnetic when she is on screen.
