I love how even a female transformer has to embody Hollywood's worship of being skinny.
How much you want to bet it'll be voiced by someone like Angelina Jolie, and there'll be several moments that leave 13 year old boys going "oh my god, I want to have sex with that robot!!"

The last franchise I would turn to for "progressive" thinking in standards of female beauty would be Bay's Transformers.
But then I kind of like slender women, so I guess I'm part of the problem.

Well, exactly. Superhero physiques work the same way. It's a fast distinction to separate male and female. I don't see anything objectionable about it.

But, similarly, superheroines like Wonder Woman or Power Girl, who are supposed to be incredibly strong, are often drawn with slender supermodel features and not the excessive muscle male supers get.
This is the same, only Transformerized.

Okay it's time to turn up the heat on Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. We've waited low in the weeds letting all the summer movies get their stuff out. We've seen the great year end movies, and watched the upcoming clips of the upcoming summer fare. We've seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads. Please, come on.
Well, I promise you we will rock your world with Transformers 2. The fans wanted ROBOTS KICKING ASS - well we got it. Today we are releasing the teaser poster and soon the onslaught will continue with a steady drum beat until June 26th.

I don't really have any interest in this film but I came across this on Cinematical and I couldn't help but find it kind of amusing. Especially coupled with that triumphant avatar. He either has a sense of humor about himself, or he's realized the persona/reputation he's created and he's decided to wholeheartedly embrace it, or he's just a naturally unabashed eager entertainer. Maybe all three.

That's Bay. I think he came to terms with the fact that critics hate him, but the masses love him, so why fight it? He likes explosions--after all, he puts so many in his movies--so why not just come out and say that explosions are awesome?
He talks that way all the time on his message board. Maybe there's something to admire from that.

Some robo news:
After months of speculation about which giant transforming robots may or may not appear in Michael Bay’s upcoming mega-sequel, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Paramount Pictures has been kind enough to release a full list of the participating Autobots and Decepticons – and there’s a couple of surprises on there…
The Autobots are: gravelly leader Optimus Prime (like, duh!), weapons specialist Ironhide, medic Ratchet and Sam Witwicky’s bestest friend, Bumblebee, now a 2010 Chevy Camaro.
That quartet, of course, return from the first movie, but now they’re joined by reinforcements including turncoat Decepticon, and doddery old duffer, Jetfire; female Autobot Arcee (briefly glimpsed in the teaser trailer that launched a couple of months ago); Jolt, and Skids & Mudflap, two Autobots known as The Twins.
So, nine Autobots in total. Not bad, but they’ll need all the strength they can muster in the face of the overwhelming Decepticon onslaught. They are:
Returning characters Starscream (formerly second-in-command, now head honcho) and Scorponok; and new characters, Sideways, Ravage (the panther-like beastie glimpsed in the teaser trailer), Soundwave (now a satellite orbiting Earth), The Doctor, a tiny bastard that will torment Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky, Wheelie, Demolishor (the giant wheeled villain that we saw fighting Optimus in the teaser), and the seven – s-e-v-e-n – Constructicons that will form the massive Devastator. They are: Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower (wasn’t he in the Police Academy movies?), Longhaul, Rampage, Overload and, erm, Mixmaster. Jazzy Jeff wasn’t available, apparently.
Then, last but not least, there’s The Fallen – the catalyst for the movie’s plot, the Lucifer of the Transformersverse. But we knew he’d be in it – he’s the title character, for God’s sake.
But the plot thickens: Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, is not on the list. Given that he was last seen getting killed and dumped into the ocean, that shouldn’t be a surprise. But all along, the suspicion has been that Megatron will appear in the movie, and that his exclusion from the list is misdirection on Bay’s part. After all, Hugo Weaving has confirmed that he has recorded dialogue as the voice of Megatron, so… watch this space.
Also, ILM effects guru, Scott Farrar, hinted recently that there may be as many as 60 robots in the finished movie, which is way more than Paramount have revealed thus far..

Steven Spielberg sat next to me in a big 100 person theater at Sony today,” wrote Bay on his online forum. “There were 98 empty seats. The lights came up after we just watched my cut of Revenge of the Fallen. He turned to me and said ‘It’s awesome’ He felt this movie was better then the first - and probably my best, who knows - at this point in a movie you start to lose your objectivity. I just hope the fans like it.”

Spielberg loves spectacle. Just because he wouldn't make this film this exact way if he directed it doesn't mean he wasn't awed by the gadgetry on display.

If it's not a glorious 70mm IMAX experience, I fail to see the point in paying more money, especially for a screen that is likely only marginally bigger. I saw The Dark Knight in both a regular theater and a retrofitted "new IMAX" theater. The experience was not really much different except it cost me more money.

It's really all that is available to me except for the one at the MD Science Center, and I do not believe they typically have the in-release Hollywood movies on their docket.
This makes my point though. A good number of so-called IMAX screens are these new Digital knockoffs and people not only do not know better but may very well, like me, not have many or any free-standing IMAX theatres near by. These films catering their release, or at least holding "special releases," specifically for IMAX are only stealing many people's money. Bay and the producers specifically have kept things from regular theater audience members and some diehard fans who don't know better are going to waste $5 in an IMAX Digital theatre.
It is a trend I could do without. Release your damn movie everywhere. It'll already gross a billion worldwide. Is this necessary?

Badmouthing IMAX and downplaying its experience just-because is silly to me. Of course it doesn't make a movie better. They can give me blankies, pillows, and Thai erotic massages during the movie and it won't make the movie better. That's a ridiculous notion and it's insulting to assume that everyone who loves IMAX believe that it's a quality enhancer.
No, I love IMAX because I like watching movies on a giant screen with an awesome sound system, the same way I don't like watching movies on a fucking iPod. IMAX theaters also has less people, bigger seats and way more legroom. I would gladly pay $5 extra for all of that. Some people don't. Whatever. That's why planes have different classes, too.

I was being mostly facetious. Giant robots on a giant screen, get it? The symmetry rocks, is all. I thought it was cool that on certain wide shots, Bumblebee was at 1:1 ratio. It's fun.
I understand that it's unfair to people who don't have real IMAX theaters nearby, but that is not anyone's fault. I have a friend who lived in a small town in Oregon that doesn't have a cineplex, so the one movie theater, you just see whatever's playing, unless you drive to another town. That sucks, but that's just the way it is. Some places have stuff others don't. IMAX is only available to limited people and not everybody get to have it. That's just the way it is. Would I be happier if IMAX is available at every cineplex in the world? Shit, yeah, but I'm not gonna not get excited because I happen to be in a luckier position than others.
I just don't understand the aversion. I don't understand why it's so bad that some people would pay extra for an extranormal experience and the filmmakers want to reward them for it. It's a few extra scenes, it's just a special thing that doesn't hinder the regular version. I look at it like special screenings, where you pay extra to watch Up at Pixar Studios, or you get a special ticket to go to a party with the filmmakers. Things like that. Or, to be more related, like watching The Dark Knight on IMAX and not have the 4:3 shot compositions, the way Nolan framed it, cut in half. It's just an option.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/57/UHDV.svg/800px-UHDV.svg.png
The plan is that ultra-high definition TVs will have 16 times the resolution of anything we currently have now in high definition. It'll be more than twice the resolution of 70 millimeter film, a commonly used format for IMAX movies [source: Hamasaki]. The projected images will be crammed with 32 million pixels, compared to the current HD experience that displays about two million pixels. With these huge numbers, not only is the image resolution exceptionally rich, the screen ends up being quite large. Developers expect the consumer versions will be between about 100 and 200 inches (254 and 508 centimeters) in size. Commercial versions -- possibly used for educational, security and advertising purposes at sporting events, art shows and museums -- would be more along the lines of about 350 to 600 inches (889 to 1,524 centimeters).

I'm pretty sure the IMAX they have in Columbus is not the seven story tall one, but its still better than a regular theater. I can dig it.
Don't you think having an extended version in IMAX is more incentive to pay a little more for the IMAX ticket? I do.

Apparently the movie is like 1 minute longer in IMAX so no big deal. As for the debate if IMAX is the ideal way to see a film like this. Considering Bay shot some of the major action sequences with special IMAX cameras I would say that the way to see it is in an IMAX theater.
I shall join the camp of those who are actually looking forward to this.

Just wanna add something entirely useless about the first film and that is that, as Watashi has said in his soundtacks thread, "Arrival to Earth" is an incredible piece of music by Steve Jablonsky. I hope that said theme will return in the sequel.

That track is the reason I keep looking for a used copy of the score. I have to add that to my pile of scores.

Now that i've read that post from N8, i guess the new IMAX theater here in Sao Paulo also isn't the seven story tall screens. I was slightly disappointed when i first went the IMAX waiting for an awesome huge screen only to find a "bigger" screen... however it was still a nice experience.

I've only seen a couple of movies on the Imax format (I Am Legend, Spider-Man 3), and I suspect they weren't the full-size screens, but even then it was too much for me. My eyes were overwhelmed - I felt like I was scanning the picture for the vital information.
Then again, I'm not a fan of the newfangled 3D stuff. Times like this I think I was born an old man.

The comment isn't nonsensical, but perhaps overused and/or a little insulting to moviegoers who appreciate a loud and explosive, albeit vapid blockbuster. Still, if the reviewer is part of that group, then I see little wrong with it.

I don't really like bad movies (not anymore these days, at least). The movie is great fun. Therefore I consider it a good movie. It stimulates me. I don't see a need to abandon my brain to justify liking it. Saying it's a movie you need to "check your brain at the door" is to say that any movie is likable--just don't think about it too much! That's just idiotic. It's a hack line for hack critics, like DAMU said. I thought about Transformers after watching it, I thought about it before seeing it 3 times in the theaters, I thought about it while writing my review. The narrative is stupid but it works just fine being processed by my brain, and I even really like some aspects of it, like the idea of bonding Bumblebee and Sam through sex in the same vein teenagers view their cars. More over, my brain appreciates its skill in devising action scenes. Please don't tell me it's a movie that requires willful ignorance to appreciate.

Oh yeah, here... Fun IMAX info Paramount emailed to me:
Because IMAX screens can be as high as eight stories and 120 feet wide, the Chevy Camaro that turns into Bumblebee™ will actually be life-size.
You could stand Bumblebee™ on Optimus Prime’s® shoulders and they would still not be as high as the largest IMAX screen.
The average IMAX screen is 4,500 times bigger than an average TV screen and is as wide as an NFL football field.
The light from the powerful lamp in an IMAX projector is so bright that if it were on the moon, we could see it from Earth – and possibly even from Cybertron.
IMAX film uses the largest film frame in the motion picture industry, 10x the picture area of a conventional 35 mm film frame. The length of the IMAX DMR® version of “TRANSFORMERS” is more than 50,000 ft long.
In IMAX theatres, audiences will feel the impact of the footsteps of the Autobots’® and the Decepticons® thanks to the powerful IMAX sound system – a multi-channel, state-of-the-art, digital surround sound system that uses 44 custom-designed speakers.

From an interview with Bay from Total Film:
And Bay admits that if film bosses give the go ahead for a third Transformers movie, they will have to find a different director.
He adds, "After the three and a half years I've spent making these movies, I feel like I've had enough of the Transformers world.
"I need to do something totally divergent, something without any explosions."
Maybe the interviewer mixed things up because I thought Bay was going to do TF3. Maybe he just meant he's going to do something smaller in between.

I've heard the small picture he wants to do is a project that he's wanted to do for years called Pain & Gain; described as a dark film about steroid-abusing bodybuilders who engage in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida that's based on a true story. Apparently it has elements of dark comedy too.

I've been to that one, mostly for IMAX documentaries when I was in school, but I saw Harry Potter 5 there. From what I can gather, the size is fine and they project 70mm, but since the screen is curved so distinctly, everything seems slightly warped and distorted. I found it really distracting. One of the problems may have been I was sitting really low in the theater and that may have added to the distortion, but friends that have seen features on both the dome and the regular 70-foot IMAX screen have said the dome is not what the experience is meant to be. It's wonderful for things like Everest or Fighter Pilot due to the immersion, but it doesn't quite work for features.
They've just opened two digital IMAX screens in Charlotte, one at Stonecrest and the other at Concord Mills. I have an urge to draw up some flyers and stand outside espousing the inferiority of these new screens. As it stands, the nearest true IMAX screens are in Raleigh and Myrtle Beach. Shame.

I have no idea if this is true or if Michael Bay is making shit up.
In a press conference Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif., Bay explained that he was inspired to put Obama in the movie instead of some fictional president because the two have met in passing. During an airport layover in Las Vegas, Bay ended up walking side by side with Obama, who was without bodyguards, let alone Secret Service protection, carrying his own bags. (This was before Obama won election last November.)
Bay introduced himself to Obama and complimented a recent speech. When Obama asked him what Bay has directed, the president-to-be recognized names such as The Rock, Armageddon and Transformers. "Oh, you're a big-ass director," Obama said, according to Bay.
