View Full Version : Match Cut's Top 50 Film Scores (Stage I)

Alright, I'm taking the initiative and starting a new list for us. It's time to move away from the big picture to the underscore and tackle film music.

There's a couple unique rules for this one, so let's cover them:

*Nominate up to 30 Scores
*Scores nominated must be original music composed for the film. That means soundtracks like Pulp Fiction and Amadeus are not eligible as the music used was not written specifically for the film.
*Any original orchestral, musical, or songs are eligible. So you can include Saturday Night Fever on this list because it's underscored with original compositions by the Bee Gees.
*Some films have both types of music, make sure you know what you are nominating.
*Any score receiving two votes will make it to the next round and on the ballot.

I'll let voting happen for about a week, after that voting will close and I'll compile the ballot.

Please format your list in Alphabetical order, with movie title first, than composer.

Example:

Alexander, Vangelis
Star Wars, John Williams
Titanic, James Horner

Any other issues, we'll tackle as we go along.

Now nominate!

EDIT: Please post 10 more scores so we get a strong ballot

I'll wait for more lists to be given first because I have difficulty remembering my favorite scores until I see some film names.

But I just want to say that Rota's score for La Strada is heart rending.

There's no way I could remember anywhere close to 30 scores. I'll definitely go Qrazy's route.

Would Einhorn's score for The Passion of Joan of Arc count? It was written specifically for the film, but decades after its release.

Or Cinematic Orchestra's score for Man with a Movie Camera?

Yes, it does count. As long as it was written specifically for the film, it can be composed at any time.

I could've gone on forever with this list. Every film I listed used music in a way that managed to be memorable without stealing the show. The list also reflects my eclectic tastes. These choices are all over the place. But in every case, the music is one of the first things I think about when remembering the film and I can instantly start humming the tunes. I could have gone with any number of Ozu scores, but Good Morning feels to me the most varied, the lightest, the most fun. I let The Wizard of Oz stand in for all classic Hollwood musicals because, musically speaking, it is my favorite. My favorite on the list is Paris, Texas.

Blow Out (Donaggio)
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (Nyman)
Dawn of the Dead (Goblin et al)
Dead Man (Young)
The Godfather (Coppola/Rota)
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Morricone)
Good Morning (Mayuzumi)
Halloween (Carpenter)
It's Alive (Herrmann)
Jaws (Williams)
King Kong (Steiner)
Lolita (Riddle)
The Long Goodbye (Williams)
M. Hulot's Holiday (Romans)
Mon Oncle (Barcellini et al)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Pythons)
Once Upon a Time in the West (Morricone)
One From the Heart (Waits)
Paris, Texas (Cooder)
Playtime (Lemarque)
Popeye (Nilsson)
Psycho (Herrmann)
Rosemary's Baby (Komeda)
Rumble Fish (Copeland)
Saturday Night Fever (Bee Gees)
Schindler's List (Williams)
Taxi Driver (Herrmann)
The Thin Blue Line (Glass)
Vertigo (Herrmann)
The Wizard of Oz (Arlen)

The Halloween theme is appropriate for setting the mood of the film, but gosh, it's an irritating piece of music.

Editing my list to comply with the "original music only" caveat:

Out: The Shining - because most of Carlos' score was never used, instead going with non-original score classical music cues, which Kubrick seemed to favor.

In: The Man Who Planted Trees - anyone who's seen this knows that Chartrand and Rogers' score is as sumptuous and delicate as the images to which it's married.

I disagree on it being irritating, but I am judging these based on their effectiveness within the film, not as stand-alone pieces of music.

Really, three noms for The Goblins' Dawn of the Dead score? Of all their scores, that's one of the last I'd place on a pedestal. It's effective and all, but it has always struck me as a relatively generic effort within their library of work.

And you think it makes the film, really? I wouldn't go that far. Still, with that said, have you ever watched the longer Cannes cut (mistakenly labeled as a Director's Cut in the past)? It was edited together before Goblin wrote their score, so it features a bunch of generic temp music, and whew... it makes a huge difference.
