Do you like much other Cat?
Yes, indeed. "Peace Train" is great. Also really like "Wild World", "Moonshadow" and "Morning is Broken". I've got to do more listening to his albums in their entirety. I mostly know the hits.

Definitely, then, start with Teaser & the Firecat/Tea for the Tillerman (both equal in quality), then Mona Bone Jakon, then Buddha and the Chocolate Box. The track on that one right after O Very Young is my favorite Cat song, Sun/C79. It'd be in my top five, easy.

Song: "Who Wants to Live Forever"
Artist: Queen
Album: A Kind of Magic
Year: 1986
Touch my tears with your lips. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BApaVMqAVtc&feature=related)
The song became extra poignant following the death of Freddie Mercury. Indeed, it turned into something of an anthem for the way Mercury lived his life. But it was Brian May who wrote the song, that modest unsung hero of the band who was content to give center stage to rock's great showman. May wrote the song for the film Highlander. This is what we call 'overshooting your target'. It is a decent film, but the song outclasses it by such a wide margin that its use becomes just the slightest bit awkward. The song is evidence of Queen's ability to produce rock music that is not merely grandiose; it approaches transcendence.

Song: "New World"
Artist: Björk
Album: Selmasongs
Year: 2000
I'm softly walking on air. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoRmazITi6U)
It is the song played over the closing credits following the devastating finale of Lars von Trier's musical film Dancer in the Dark. The same basic melody is used in the film's overture and also the heart wrenching "Next-to-Last Song". Obviously, the film's emotional resonance is a large reason why it is so meaningful to me. However, I think that the song definitely holds up on its own. The lyrics are spare; yet, Björk sings each short line as if it were the next rung leading to heaven. Behind her, brass and strings share space with electronic beats and the melody is more gorgeous than I can possibly express. I am placing it #2 here, but it really could be considered #1B.

Song: "Across the Universe"
Artist: The Beatles
Album: Let it Be
Year: 1970
Limitless undying love. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbirjVeI_Pk&feature=related)
All right, all right. Perhaps it is anti-climactic to end with one of the great Beatles classics. However, this knock-out Lennon tune is the pinnacle for me when it comes to songs that attempt to express the beauty of being alive. Lennon himself considered it perhaps the best lyrics he had written for the Beatles and I certainly agree. Instead of the hazy surrealism that he often employed, here he describes a feeling of profound clarity. Line after line evokes wondrous visions while the gentle chords behind him suggest both the cosmos and the mysticism of the East. The repetition of "nothing's gonna change my world" is like a mantra, establishing a personal place for peace and tranquility. If I have not heard the song in a while, it can occasionally move me to tears. It is the anti-Gwar.

I think someone was making a Match-Cut mix tape and I contributed that song. Don't think I said it was my favorite though. So many great Sleater-Kinney songs. I just happened to choose a couple that I feel a particular connection to.

Kudos to having The Beatles at number one, and for that matter Björk at number two. I wouldn't choose "Across the Universe" to be in my Top 20 Beatles songs, but like, different strokes and stuff. :)

Good job with the list.
John Lennon looks a whole heck of a lot like Daniel Radcliffe in that picture. It's kind of uncanny.

Nicely done, Spinal.
And I might as well point out that probably my favorite song of those 24 is "Under Pressure," which would be near the top of my list if I were to ever compose such a one.

Song: "Mighty Quinn"
Artist: Manfred Mann
Album: Mighty Garvey!
Year: 1968
Everybody's gonna jump for joy! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzQXf3WgJTA&feature=related)
This song, written by Bob Dylan (but unreleased by him at the time), gets a happy pop sheen from the British group responsible for the popularity of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". The combination of Manfred Mann's smooth sound and Dylan's grounded folk makes for a perfect union, from the brief flute intro to the angelic backing vocals. Watch the video at 2:10 and you can see lead singer Paul Jones apparently forget to lip sync the word 'everybody' and then chuckle to himself.
Yes!!! Did you know the song is written about Anthony Quinn in Nic Ray's The Savage Innocents? Great Song/Amazing film
