Erik Nietzsche The Early Years, directed by Jacob Thuesen 2007

Written by Lars von Trier. Supposed to be somewhat autobiographical. Last time someone else directed his script though, the results were disastrous.

FINLAND
A Man’s Job, directed by Aleksi Salmenperä 2007

Saw it at the festival in Portland. Eh, it's OK. You can probably do better.

Head-On, directed by Fatih Akin 2004

I liked this one, but you may as well get it on DVD.

ROMANIA
California Dreamin’ (Endless), directed by Cristian Nemescu 2007

I would recommend this one. Definitely a cool film, though the version I saw could have used some more cuts.

Pope’s Toilet, directed by Enrique Fernandez CĂ©sar Charlone 2007
Ew.

There are some I have heard of that sound interesting, though I suspect if I ever had the opportunity to do something like this, I would seek out films I have never heard of that I may rarely ever get the chance to see (many of these will likely never show up for distribution in the US) and go with those. Why see something you'll find here later on? Have an adventure. Explore obscure cinema and find a hidden treasure.

That's my recommendation.

Huh, nearly identical to Sydney's lineup. Anyway, I've seen Head-On, The Edge of Heaven, Still Life and Young Adam. I didn't care much for The Edge of Heaven but I think you'd like it much more than I did since you're a fan of Babel, Head-On as Spinal mentioned, is on DVD, as is Young Adam but I didn't care for it, and I liked Still Life but don't know if you would.

Erik Nietzsche The Early Years, directed by Jacob Thuesen 2007

Written and narrated by Lars von Trier, and the leading role as Lars von Trier/Erik Nietzche is played by Jonathan Spang, a brilliant upcoming comedian/stand upper/actor.

Supposed to be very good.

Fighter, directed by Natasha Arthy 2007

Supposed to have decent effects, but a terrible banal story.

The Island of Lost Souls, directed by Nikolaj Arcel 2007

A good supernatural adventure thriller for kids and people that are young at heart.

Which is a shame, because I love Thomas Vinterberg's Festen and It's All About Love.

I must add that I haven't watched Dear Wendy, and after the bad word of mouth, I'm not in a particular hurry to do so. I will check out his latest film, A Man Comes Home, which I hear is a bit of return to form.

Wait...really? I thought it was astonishingly bad.

Wait...really? I thought it was astonishingly bad.

Yeah, but I haven't watched it since it was first released on dvd, so I should really check it out again. I remember it had strikingly beautiful images and some interesting storyline that I remember motly nothing about.

I should have said that I think I love it. Heh.

...many of these will likely never show up for distribution in the US...

That's so true. About 2/3 of the movies I saw at SIFF while living in Seattle were things I've never had a chance to see again. (About 3/4 of those for very good reason. But that's 1/2 the fun of it. Sifting through a lot of blech to find a few pearls.)

My favorite things about the festival were the Secret Festival, the movie poster auction, and dashing out of the Egyptian early when the film sucked beyond belief to grab a bite to eat on Broadway before heading back to the Egyptian (or Harvard Exit) for the next screening on my Fool Serious agenda. I'd see 40 to 50 movies in three weeks and barely remember some of them. But wow! Some of those will never be forgotten like Wings of Desire and The Vanishing. Not to mention a number of fantastic films that nobody seems to talk about any more like The Moderns, Bagdad Cafe, and Apartment Zero.
