Future River could be in the space suit, be the one to kill the doctor, and then that's what she could be in prison for? She said she killed the greatest man she'd ever known... how can that NOT be The Doctor?

That's what I assumed from the moment she said that. Then there's the premiere...

where she defeatedly says "of course" when she tries to shoot the space suit person and fails. I figured that was some timey-wimey rule where she can't kill herself because that'd be a paradox or something.

You're right, there's no one who fits that bill on the show except the Doctor. It actually seems fairly obvious to me, so much so that I think the writers want us to think she kills him and they'll somehow pull the rug out from under us.

I didn't bring it up because I figured everyone thought that and you would laugh at me for thinking I was clever.

One thing I'm really enjoying about rewatching is that the first time I saw the series I was so busy following the plot that I missed out on how funny half the lines are.

The Doctor: Rory! That's a relief. Thought I'd burst out of the wrong cake. Again. That reminds me, there's a girl standing outside in a bikini. Could somebody let her in and give her a jumper? Lucy. Lovely girl. {whispering} Diabetic.

One thing I'm really enjoying about rewatching is that the first time I saw the series I was so busy following the plot that I missed out on how funny half the lines are.The lines are usually the best thing about the show. I remember laughing at that part pretty hard when it happened.

I like the lizard people (their name starts with Silu...or something....) two part arc. But then I usually enjoy the standard monster episodes a lot more than the ones where they encounter monsters when they go back in time to meet someone famous. Although I've liked/loved plenty of those episodes, too. However, I'm a bit tired of the Daleks-I would be fine if Series 6 didn't somehow feature them, but they've shown up in every series so far, so I'm not holding my breath. Still waiting to see the Sontarians again-those guys are badass, and my favorite Doctor Who villains.

I liked the episode "Amy's Choice" with the Dream Lord who turns out to be a projection of the darker parts of The Doctor, but when I was looking up a quote on that episode I found out that everyone wants to talk about "Valeyard."

The only problem with the Silurians is that most of them in that episode weren't really villains, save for maybe a couple. The rest were willing to compromise and have peace, which wrecked some of the dramatic tension in that two parter. However, the shock of seeing Rory being killed was still a kick in the pants. Poor guy got killed twice in that series.

Last night's episode was great, namely because it was largely more light hearted than the first two episodes, which was really needed, and it was quite funny. So will the Doctor keep trying to figure out if Amy's preggers or not? That's the second time he's run his special device (I'm not sure what the hell that thing is, actually) after talking to her in the Tardis. And how many times are they going to try and trick us into thinking Rory's going to die?

Next week's looks interesting, to say the least. That preview might have contained a spoiler, though. I might start skipping them, just because I miss not knowing what would be in the next episode.

Thing about the pirate episode

I think it felt more light hearted simply because it could be anywhere in the series. It was originally slated to be the ninth episode of the season and then they decided to switch it over, so basically it didn't have any correlation besides the added in coda.

Mara
05-10-2011, 02:44 PM
I found this episode a tad too silly. Plus, the Doctor was acting very un-Doctor-ish. He made almost no effort to stop the pirates from being be-sirened, and then abandoned them all on the space ship despite the fact that most of them were suffering from nothing more than a cut finger, and therefore should have been able to go home to their families.

The eye-patched woman is creepy and fascinating, though.

Three quibbles:

*Are we just going to kill Rory every episode? Is that the plan?
*I love Matt Smith. Really. But Tennant was just slightly better at "heartbreaking."
*I hate the flannel shirt/denim skirt/black tights combo Amy has been wearing all... freaking... season. It's ugly and unflattering. Find new clothes, Amy.

I love that the TARDIS finds Rory attractive. Charming.

So many great quotes. So many.

Idris: Are all people like this?

Doctor: Like what?

Idris: So much bigger on the inside.

Idris: Biting's excellent. It's like kissing, only there's a winner.

The Doctor: It's a TARDIS junkyard. Come on. Oh, sorry. Do you have a name?

Idris: Seven hundred years and finally he asks.

The Doctor: What do I call you?

Idris: What you call me. Sexy.

The Doctor: Only when we're alone.

Idris: We are alone.

The Doctor: Oh. Come on then, Sexy.

Idris: You're like a nine-year-old trying to rebuild a motorbike in his bedroom. And you never read the instructions.

The Doctor: I always read the instructions!

Idris: There's a sign on my front door. You have been walking past it for seven hundred years. What does it say?

The Doctor: That's not instructions.

Idris: There's an instruction at the bottom. What does it say?

The Doctor: "Pull to open."

Idris: Yes, and what do you do?

The Doctor: I push!

Idris: Every single time. Seven hundred years, police box doors open out the way.

The Doctor: I think I have earned the right to open my front doors any way I want.

The Doctor: Uh, Amy, this is, well, she's my TARDIS. Except she's a woman. She's a woman and she's a TARDIS.

Amy: She's the TARDIS?

The Doctor: And she's a woman. She's a woman and she's a TARDIS.

Amy: Did you wish really hard?

The Doctor: Shut up, not like that.

Idris: Hello. I'm... Sexy.

The Doctor: Oh, still shut up.

House: I've killed hundreds of Time Lords.

The Doctor: Fear me. I've killed all of them.

The Doctor: The House deleted all the bedrooms. I should probably make you two a bedroom. You'd like that, won't you?

Amy: Okay, um, Doctor, this time could we lose the bunk bed?

The Doctor: No, bunk beds are cool. A bed with a ladder. You can't beat that.

I'm not a fan of Moffat's Doctor ... but Gaiman's episode was pretty good.

Transferring the Tardis' intelligence into a human being was inspired.

Beyond that one clever idea, though, Gaiman didn't seem to have much to add except, "hijinks ensue."

This is the first time I've seen Smith do anything in a remotely calm manner. I really liked the way he play the reaction to opening the cabinet and seeing all the cubes.

Sweet. Rewatched the episode, they clearly manipulated his voice cause it sounds nothing like him.

I also finally caught everything the TARDIS and the Doctor were saying as they zipped through space on the makeshift tardis.

She mentioned having 30 control rooms archived even though he's only regenerated a dozen times. "So far" she said. If he's over 700 years old and only regenerated a dozen times but "dies" at just over 900 years old as in the premiere, than that's either quite a lot of regenerations in the next couple centuries or that whole death ain't so real after all.

But she would have to die in her current form, right? That'd mean she can't regenerate from now until then.

it's weird thinking about this with the reverse time streams too. because does she mean he's gotten more violent compared to the doctor she knew before which is the future doctor? does her saying this lead to him toning it down so what she said ends up being true? is she referring to stuff in her journal somehow?

We all assume that River is in jail for killing The Doctor, but I'm kind of worried she might have killed Rory. It would be far more tragic for her. There was... something... in her face when Rory tried to recruit her from jail. Like her heart was breaking at seeing him.

I've read this theory as well.

Unfortunately, it makes sense. First of all, it's been fairly obvious she's talking about The Doctor for some time now, which means it most certainly isn't him. But now that we know Rory is her father he's the only other logical choice for "the best man I've ever known". I'm even thinking that all this "good man goes to war" bit was about Rory, not The Doctor, the latter of which has shown is less-honorable side this season whilst Rory continues to be the most loyal husband and father in the history of ever. And killing her own father would explain why she voluntarily allows herself to be imprisoned for what she's done.

For the record, I hate this theory. The only person I might love more than The Doctor is Rory.

I too need to go back and rewatch the River episodes. I'm all caught up on this series except for Vincent and The Doctor. Plus I've been able to catch some of the David Tennant stuff too, albeit totally out of order.

Okay, I think this rewatch actually cleared up what I thought was a plot hole.

It bothered me that River apparently remembered the Doctor enough to remind Amy of him at her wedding, when he had been erased from existence. However, if River is Time-Lordian in aspect (even though physically still human) it would explain why she could remember him-- just like the Doctor still remembered Rory when he was erased.

Awesome.

If you're a Facebook friend of mine you've seen these already, but a new bar opened up a couple of blocks from where I live. I took a night walk there in the nice weather last night since it's so close, and imagine my excitement when I saw that this is the entrance to their bathroom:

Viewing one of Series 1's earlier episodes, "The Unquiet Dead," reminds me just how raw and new the reboot felt at the time. Good episode, too, and of course the show over the past couple of series has worked in famous people from the past dealing with weird alien situations. I think that going back through the first two series is going to be fun. No need to do that for Series 3-5, which are far more fresh in my mind.

Obviously that episode is one of the best of the season. I loved all of the reveals. The one secret tidbit that I noticed but it only got glossed over and I'm curious if they'll ever go over again:

The people inside the robot were talking about the doctor's death and they said something along the lines of nobody can have their death rewritten and then someone replied, well it happened once with Kennedy. I'm gonna watch the episode again with my mom in a little bit and I'll see if I didn't just hear that wrong.

Edit:

She says: "Time can be written, remember Kennedy." That line is foreshadowing something in the future I just know it.

Best line of the night:

I was on my way to this gay Gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled when I suddenly thought, "Gosh, the Third Reich's a bit rubbish. I think I'll kill the Fuhrer."

And possible plot hole:

The regeneration into "Mels" happened after the blonde child incarnation regenerated in the New York street... which we saw. But it was (presumably) the blonde child incarnation in the space suit that shot the Doctor in Utah, so our current Melody/River should think she has already completed her mission.

This will perhaps be cleared up later.

Maybe she's not the one in the space suit? Possible insane theory: What if it's the Doctor in the space suit and he kills a slimeball version of himself on the beach that day? Made someone watch "Vincent and the Doctor" for the first time and reduced her to a big ball of wibbly-wobbly mess. I kind of knew that would happen, but I'm a bastard.

Also, just realized on this viewing that making the alien a metaphor for depression is pretty powerful. Not just how Vincent is the only who can see him, but how The Doctor and Amy ended up doing absolutely nothing useful this episode in regards to the alien. Vincent fought it himself in the end, and the best thing they could do was be his friends. That, unfortunately, is pretty accurate when it comes to mental depression. No one can really understand exactly what you're going through, and no one can face it for you. All they can do is be supportive.

I mean, last season they had to cut down on special effects all season to save money for all the CG in "Pandorica Opens/Big Bang."

This season they've been going pretty all out. Shooting in America, creating the TARDIS junkyard, doubling people up in the Gangers, a space battle in "A Good Man Goes to War," all the Tesselecta stuff in "Let's Kill Hitler," and now this lush episode. I wonder how big the finale is going to be.

No more Rory?

Really?

This felt a little anticlimactic to me. I like the idea of The Doctor trying to spare his companions by letting them go, but it all felt a little bit... easy. And where did The Doctor get the money to set up the Williams/Assembled Ponds in a posh little house? Remember when he had to borrow a pound note from Donna's father to buy her a lottery ticket?

That said, the production values were great in the first two-thirds and very creepy/cool. Loved Rita as a character, would not have minded her as a companion, hair was very shiny.

And are we ever going to get a spinoff with the Old-Timey Lizard Lesbian Lady? Because I'm pretty sure the internets demanded it.

That ending was completely devastating, really. I'm sure we'll get more Rory and of course we'll see more Amy in the future-the season finale will probably require and demand it.

As for the overall episode, loved the 80s Overlook Hotel setting, and the entire plot was expertly weird, as usual. The fact that this series is the darkest out of all them feels oddly fitting, and its not really surprising to me that the Doctor would once again say goodbye to more companions. If the report about Amy coming back for next season is indeed true, which it is, then she'll rival Ramona (I don't recall if I spelled her name right) and a couple others for longest companion, and best Rose in terms of the new series.

Next week's looks great, even though the Cybermen are the one villain I've never cared for at all. Craig is coming back! Yey!

Pretty good penultimate episode. Really enjoyed the return of Craig, and baby Stormageddon, which name I totally want to use some day. I hope not, because I'd rather be really surprised. I'd post my theory in spoilers, but I doubt its going to be correct due to my faith in the writers.

Good thing the episode focused more on Craig and the baby than on the lame Cybermen. So that's how the Doctor got his cowboy hat, and they did indeed confirm that River kills the Doctor.

I'm bothered by the episode. Feels like a cheat. I recall the season premiere, Amy praying next to the Doctor's body that "maybe it's a clone or something" and the old guy saying "That is most certainly the Doctor and he is most certainly dead." Umm...or it's not at all the Doctor and he's not at all dead? Apparently the Doctor isn't the only one who lies.

Even though I think last season's finale was stronger, this was a really good finish to a great season. Series 6 Part 2>Series 6 Part 1, by far.

Really though I'm glad what happened wasn't exactly the twist I previously thought of, overall. Even though she was only killed in the alternative universe, Amy murdering evil eye patch lady was awesome. And sort of disturbing, plus unexpected. They made her more badass this season.

And at this point Rory flat out rules, of course. His arc has been even more satisfying than Mickey's was back in Series 2.

Another point. If they really want to reboot the series why don't they start by junking all that Time Lord rubbish anyway? I always thought it was a lousy back story for the Doctor. Or am I just being appallingly heretical?

Well he managed perfectly well for six years before the Time Lords turned up being dead boring in stupid hats. How about simply reverting to the original idea: that the Doctor's home has been destroyed by some unspecified nasty, rotten aliens. Gives him a nice motivation for bopping nasty, rotten aliens whenever he finds them and for adopting Earth, its culture, and to a great its history as his own.

My real reason for thinking this is a good idea is simply that I've never able to believe Gallifrey as a place the Doctor could ever have come from. It's one of the most lazily conceived societies in the show's history (against stiff opposition) and the Doctor has nothing remotely in common with any of the inhabitants.

Oh, Moffatt...

I didn't know this:

there was a lot of pressure on this new team to be as good as, if not better than, the previous incarnation. And I think that they, for the sake of Matt and Karen as well, who are younger in terms of sort of work experience were relatively inexperienced. They hadn’t been acting for very long. I think they felt that it would be good to have a character that the audience could at least be familiar with and that would also maybe help and guide the two new actors in their sort of beginnings of their journey.

And so my character was written in. But what we did was, the first two episodes where the audience is introduced to the new Doctor were shot later. The very first episode that Matt shot was the one with me, which was the…

“Weeping Angels?”
Yes, “The Weeping Angels,” exactly. It took the pressure off them a little bit. … I kept saying to them, “You’ve got nothing to worry about, you’re great.” I immediately felt from Matt that he was going to be fantastic. We already had a great sort of on camera relationship. It was just so easy and he was so willing and ready just to play.

I think by the time we’d finished those two episodes, he was then able to go back and film the episode that would be the very first one where he was seen by an audience, and it gave him the chance to just be able to breath and relax into it a little bit more.
