View Full Version : Do people here not care about Summer movies?

With the low interest in the new Dark Knight and Indy IV trailers released, and with Iron Man being only two days away (splooge attack!), it seems that these films aren't that important to be taken seriously and more RT-ish than Match Cut-ish. The summer blockbuster season is my favorite part of the year, even more than Oscar season. It's my time to show off my film geek fanhood and enjoy midnight shows and superhero movies galore. I know obviously a few enjoy these movies (8, meg, Barty), but anyone truly excited for this Friday?
Iron Man, Speed Racer, Indy IV, Hulk, The Happening, WALL-E, Hancock, Dark Knight, X-Files 2, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder...
All of them make my body tingle with joy.

No, I really don't care about them for the most part. I'm interested in Wall-E and Speed Racer mostly because I can take my kid to them. The rest could disappear and I would not miss them.

Okay, that was wrong. I apologize
Please don't neg rape me. I still hurt from last time
Any reason why though? Besides "I'm not a 22 year old college student anymore".

I guess I'm excited for some of those, and I'll probably see most of them, but I don't know. My excitement drive for these sorts of movies has waned as of late.

Sure, I'm interested in three of those, namely Speed Racer, Indy IV, and WALL-E. With the price of gas what it is and my need to travel to two distant swim meets this summer, I don't think I'll be watching many movies.

I dunno. Some of them look fun, but I don't really geekgasm for those movies anymore. I don't think I've been really thrilled to see a summer picture since 2004's Spider-Man 2.

I'm the opposite, this is the first year I've cared about any of the big summer movies. Well I guess Batman in 05.
I'm pretty excited for Indy, Iron Man, Dark Knight and Pineapple Express. Tropic Thunder, Wall-E and Step Brothers I may see but might wait for DVD. The rest I have no interest in, certainly not Speed Racer, Hancock, The Happening or X-Files.
I'll go see Iron Man probably on monday during a matinee. Downey for the win!

There's loads of posts in The Dark Knight and Iron Man. Somebody likes them.
I tend to get disappointed by most summer movies. The best is finding the one that you didn't expect to be awesome.

Yeah I used to get excited over summer films, but most of the time they ended up being a letdown. I now choose to see only a handful in the theater over summer, usually towards the end of their runs. Oscar season is definitely more exciting nowadays.

I get incredibly excited for these movies.
I don't believe being a summer-movie buff and an arthouse buff are mutually exclusive.
I'm drooling to see Iron Man, The Dark Knight and, to some extent, The Incredible Hulk...but I also consider myself a well-watched and intelligent film-goer, and I know what makes a good movie good and a bad movie bad.
For instance, I recently saw the '61 crime film Blast of Silence, and I thought it was quite brilliant. But I couldn't watch films like this every day, or I would become a depressive mess.
Similarly, I love a lot of action junk and low-brow comedies. But if I watched these every day, I fear my IQ would take a serious toll.
It's all about variety, man.

Indy IV, Dark Knight, Pineapple Express, WALL-E
Don't care about these and probably won't see:

Dreading these:
The Happening, Hancock

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I don't really like the whole "date at the movies" thing to begin with. When I do it, my mind wanders, and all I can think about is "what does she think of the movie so far? Did she find that joke funny like I did? Man, this movie sucks, but it looks like she's enjoying it, etc.".

I'm pretty much guaranteed to be interested in anything based on a comic book, enough to go see it in the theatre.
The only two I missed, that I can think of off-hand, are Daredevil and Elektra.
Hell, even after having loathed Fantastic Four, I saw Rise of the Silver Surfer in the theatre.
I really don't like seeing "deep" movies with my friends anymore, because they rarely - if ever - can take a movie that's mostly dramatic dialogue.
So I guess summer movies provide me with a great way to spend time with my friends and not feel self-conscious about the movie we're viewing.

I'm excited for The Dark Knight a crap ton (those new posters, including the British one that's REALLY wide are mystifying) but I don't really talk about them just because I generally avoid trailers. I'm excited for Speed Racer just because it looks like an LSD trip with Cristina Ricci looking real foxy and like something out of an Anime, sure to drive people who bookmark Hentai sites to cover movie seats in cinematic drool. Hulk looks really bad and all these lack of trailers (except the new one, the first one was dreadful) and the news about the post production bickering doesn't bode well for what it could be. But you never know; all that fighting might be what made American History X an incredible film. I think I read that the fight was Norton/director vs. production company, I can't remember.
Iron Man looks okay...if some friends are going to check it out I might tag along otherwise I don't know. WALL-E is a serious must-see ever since that first trailer I've thought it looked incredible. I hope The Happening is a return to form for Shymalan. Tropic Thunder looks okay, but then I again Zoolander is a movie I adore, so who knows.
Whew, I'm spent.

Two things friends of mine have said recently in earnest that have made me want to kill myself...
"Yeah I liked Manhattan Ok but then I found out Woody Allen uses the same woman (Keaton) in a lot of his films... so now I dunno..."
When pressed as to why this mattered I got some kind of... a director shouldn't reuse actors because then they're not creating new characters type response... yeah...
After watching Stardust and disliking it and telling a friend the response... "That's why you shouldn't watch obscure stuff, you'll mostly be disappointed because it's crappy." I thought about correcting him showing that a) Stardust wasn't obscure and b) 'Obscure' is relative to how ignorant you are and c) That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard... but instead I just ignored it.

It hurt my brain at No Country For Old Men when, after 40 minutes, my friend put his head in his hands and said very loudly "argh...I've had enough!" then checked his watch every 5-10 minutes for the rest of the movie.
Not because I can't understand not liking the movie, but because a) that's ignorant, as it ruins the experience for others...and b) this is the same guy who turns around and says Rambo is the best movie of the year so far.

You know what always strikes me as a good idea at first but almost always turns out to be a bad one? Having a few beers and then going to see a movie... did this with Trailer Park Boys and Borat. I thought it would increase the hilarity but meh... I just end up getting tired.
On the other hand if I do it at home on TV or projector with some friends... did it with The Host and Dead or Alive (Miike) and some others, it did increase the hilarity... improve the experience and didn't get that tired... maybe just need to be in more of a safety zone, less dark rooms or watching earlier than most movies screentimes... dunno.

My disposition with film is such that most of the summer mainstream fare are things that I'll catch on DVD on the cheap. If then. My interest in superhero films has been drowned by the sheer volume of them being released, and I've never been all that fascinated to begin with. I hate to pull the proposed Spinal card, but I'd much rather watch a film about intimate discussions on people, society, and psychology than sit through something that cost $140 million to make but which suggests no idea bolder than cgi effects.

Meh. I've been planning on seeing Iron Man opening weekend for a while, but it has nothing to do with it being part of the summer movie season. I can't help but see the division of the film calendar into seasons as anything other than silly and arbitrary.
I am totally stoked for Alfonso Cuarón's The Silmarillion. Summer of 2013 can't get here quick enough.
And only two years before they release a teaser crayon drawing of one of the elves boots!

Yeah, but me, Barty, Shoe and Morris just thought it was OK.

I can't fucking wait for Iron Man, Speed Racer, Indy, WALL-E, Dark Knight and X-Files 2.
I'm curious about Hulk and Hancock but not really crazy about them.
I hate almost all Shyamamalan movies, so no Happening anticipation.
I don't know what the rest of those are.

I don't care about summer movies because comic book films and action-packed extraveganzas are dumb.
You say that like it's a bad thing.

I love when people insult others for not sharing similar tastes in films and then brand them as elitists. This is funny to me.

Especially when it's people like Flamegrape or Fett and it's because you don't like the Resident Evil films or Aeon Flux.

Some people don't. Some people do. There has been a discussion of it. Each avatar and corresponding user name is representative of an individual. Many of these individuals have opinions that contradict the opinions of other individuals.

to say summer movies are by definition bad movies seems rather reductionist to me. it's akin to saying all the prestige pictures released during oscar season are good movies.

However, I can say that a few will deliver the goods and the rest will be resounding wastes of time. There won't be any masterpieces.
I work. I don't have time to see another movie about the Incredible Hulk.

I'm guessing you mean another Incredible Hulk movie.
I actually liked Ang Lee's Hulk, although it took me nearly half the film to warm up to its solemn tone.
That said, I have no desire to see the new one. Apparently the only justification for its existence is that "audiences" disliked the first one.
The key word here is "audiences," as opposed to individuals. Presumably these are the same audiences who dislike black-and-white and musical numbers.
The presumption is that there is, somewhere, an audience--not a bunch of individuals who go to see a given movie, but unified mass. And this mass has a set of likes and dislikes which apply to every movie, regardless of content.
Therefore, James L. Brooks wound up turning his musical I'll Do Anything into a non-musical when test audiences complained about the characters spontaenously bursting into song and dance.

Summer movies are the best because the atmosphere and anticipation of simply waiting for the movie and finally getting to see it are fun experiences. Naturally, at the end of the summer there may be only a few movies worth all the waiting, but it still makes for a nice high every week waiting to see which big movie will be worth the time and effort, and which will flop miserably.
I stood at the top of our biggest auditorium last night and watched 700 people cheer and clap after the Dark Knight and Indy trailers played. Now that's fun.

Kind of like that Seinfeld episode where George realized he was dating the female version of Jerry? Are there some latent "feelings" you need to work out, Scar?
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

QFT and repped.
At the end of the summer, only a few of the movies (or sometimes even just one or two) will be remembered.
But that whole season-long journey is so much fun.
I enjoy a well-executed and smartly written action film, just as much as I enjoy a well-executed and smartly written arthouse indie/foreign film.
I think there's just as much potential for "masterpiece material" in either grouping, and similarly, there's just as much potential for something to be offensively bad.

The truth is that this is the greatest year for summer blockbusters in a good while.
Iron Man is on the past already, but I don't remember waiting so anxiously for three big-budget movies until this year, with new Batman, Indy and a wacky Speed Racer film.
Hell, I'm watching Speed Racer on IMAX on acid. Now that's some anticipation right there. Saturday will either kill me or make me stronger.
