The movie really luxuriates in the setting, cast and set, taking more time than you think it would to set things up and get to know the characters. That pays off well given some of the plot machinations. Branagh's affection for this character and world is keenly felt and even moving. The style is a bit dusty and the puzzlebox angles are hardly first-rate, but it has an earnestness to it that won me over ultimately.

I kind of really liked this one. Decent flick, entertaining, makes me want to view the original to compare the two. Just a nice mystery movie that wisely doesn't overstay it's welcome. Good cast, too.

Maybe partly because I'm familiar with these stories, but I'm enjoying Branagh's maximalist approach to them, which comes off to me like silly, garish fun. Even the prologue (of tragic origin story for Poirot's mustache) has a better looking b&w cinematography than Belfast somehow. 6/10
