I am not a fan of Assayas - watched this because I watch whatever D'Angelo likes. I think he loves Assayas because of this one - sometimes first impressions go a long way. This one is a lot like a Dardenne brothers film - but it came first.

In a sense, yes, because the 2007 one almost functions as a film recap of the first section of the series, and then starts to diverge from it from the second film onwards (so if one day you would like to do the series + The End of Evangelion, it wouldn't feel too redundant apart from like the first six (short) episodes). I would be interested to hear from anyone whose first exposure to the Evangelion universe is with these Rebuild films (2007-2021) though, because I'm not sure if some of the condense plot bits in the 2007 film makes the film a bit less coherent, or that might just be because I'm already familiar with the more expansive plot points from the series.

It's a humdinger of a melodrama shot in a neorealist style and a comprehensive inventory of Egyptian modernity circa 1958 (mass transit, pinups, Coca-Cola, hipster rock 'n' rollers, Marilyn Monroe); when a pair of religious fundamentalists do briefly turn up, they're presented as comic fuddy-duddies.I really could have and should have written something about on my blog. I too admired how it balanced the past with then modern aspects clashing against each other. The ending is pretty intense, too.

Yeah, the story is nothing to write home about, but the art direction is good and the soundtrack is amazing. That's also the reason why I watched, and enjoyed to a minor extent, Tron: Legacy, despite hating the first Tron. Daft Punk are just great; I'm not much of a music lover and they're one of the very few artists that I bothered to listen to their whole discography. It's really a shame they split up.
