This is probably a bad take.... but I can't help but think that if Val didn't have throat cancer, that this movie would be ripped to shreds for being self-indulgent.

But he did.

It's an autobiography on film, which I can appreciate from a craftsmanship level and the several hundred hours of footage that he compiled. I just never got especially involved with it.

I thought this was very interesting. E you might be right, that if he hadn't got cancer and his whole world upended, he may have continued being he who he was. But he did, and he seemed to really change (how could one not).

He seemed to live a charmed life from the get-go, but there is a commentary in there on getting old that hit me in the gut. Reminded me a bit of the doc on John Hurt. Maybe its me, but there seems to be something about being north of 40 where there are (more than likely) less days ahead than behind, that softens some, and life becomes more about correcting and pursuing self-improvement than self-indulgence.
