A little back-story. C is my SO, and she is not a movie fan. Since I moved in with her, she's probably watched more movies in the last year than she has in the prior 5 years combined, and that's still not very much, especially compared to my consumption. Anyway, when we watch movies, we both have to agree upon the movie. Of course. That's how it typically works.
But, we also have a "I show you one, you show me one," system in place because she also hasn't seen a large number of movies that I absolutely adore. Lots of stuff from the 1980s, of course. And lots of horror movies.
So, my turn is up next and I'm flip-flopping between two movies from the 1980s that I absolutely love. What do you think, MC?
Time Bandits -- This is the movie that made me interested in movies. My parents took me to this when I was a little kid and it changed my world. I've seen it dozens of times. I love it.
Robocop -- The original, of course. I have a feeling she'll like this better. I've told her her it's a comedy with a lot of cartoony violence.
Some movies I've already shown her:
Evil Dead 2 -- She hated it. HATED it.
Fright Night -- She liked it.
The Ring -- She liked it. (Chosen over Ringu because -- hold on to yourselves -- she doesn't like subtitles.)
Final Destination -- She was kind of "meh," toward it.
Amelie -- She didn't like the ending. Her arguments were pretty on-point, too.
Fight Club -- It was "too dark for her," which I pointed out was ironic, since her previous "show me" movie was The Bone Collector.
Somewhere down the line, I plan to show her Zodiac, which I think she'll really like. It's 3 hours, though, which will be a hurdle for her. She also hasn't seen Aliens. Calm down, Scar. We'll get to it. Thank you for the Blu-Ray. We'll get to it, there there.

Do you know if she has any experience with Monty Python, or that style of humor?
If so and she liked it, that would push me more towards Time Bandits.
Otherwise Robocop all the way. Though she might find that one too dark/violent?

I forgot that I did also show her Life of Brian and she did mildly enjoy it. Oh! I just remembered, I showed her The Thing and she enjoyed it, although she couldn't sit through the dog kennel scene. It was too intense. She jokes that you can do anything to the people in the movie and she won't be bothered, but the moment the dog gets hurt, she's outta there.
Violence is not a problem with her. I do wonder if she'll consider Robocop too dark, however. I might frame it around Murphy losing and regaining his humanity, though. That might help. Honestly, some of what goes into choosing is my feeling of wanting to see the movie again. Both Time Bandits and Robocop are ones that I feel like watching again.

Trying to mentally compare to my wife...she hates 80s, so gun to my head I would tilt Robocop, but I bet she (my wife) wouldn't like either one.

Don't underestimate the power of a movie being meaningful to her because it is meaningful to you. The childhood backstory makes me lean Time Bandits.

I was born in 1985 and there's nothing more comforting to me than an 80s movie, warts and all- action, horror, comedy, or drama. Goddammit.
Spun, what movies has she shown you? I'm very curious.

Not every one is a movie freak. She at least isnt opposed to R rated movies, and around where I live, thats a bit of a rarity. Her favorite movies are Waynes World, Interview with a Vampire, and O Brother Where Art Thou. If trading the 80s for someone who isnt offended by R rated stuff, trust me, I think its a win. I have friends who's wives can barely stomach pg-13 movies...I would die having to deal with that.

Stuff that I'm not sure I could live with, if my wife didn't like Ghostbusters, Burbs, Big Trouble in Little China...
The fact that she hated Evil Dead 2 and couldn't let the humor wash over her.. especially in scenes like the resurrection of his girlfriend and the hand in the wall... tells me the slapstick stuff like Monty Python would bug her even more.

Obviously I dont mean everybody born then doesn't like 80s. But around here (where Hollywood is generally villainized anyway), shit made before your were 8-10 is considered intolerable. She hated the Princess Bride ffs.
To be clear, my wife is fairly liberal, she doesnt think of Hollywood that way, but she doesnt care much for stuff made before 1990. I'd much rather have her watch it and tell me she didn't like it than tell me she was offended. If she ever asked me what a thing was rated we probably wouldn't be married lol

Last weekend she gave me the choice of Kiss the Girls or The Frozen Ground. I went with The Frozen Ground because it has Nic Cage, whom I love. 7/10

Her favorite comedy is Airplane! She also really enjoyed Schitt's Creek.
Edit: And, earlier in the thread I did mention that I showed her Life of Brian and she said she enjoyed it.

Serial killer / police procedural. She likes it when the movies focus on the investigation. That's why I'm pretty sure she'll like Zodiac. She's also more interested in "based on a true story," movies. So, win-win.

”They killed the puppy?!”
”Don’t worry hun, they’ll get what’s coming to them.”

Anyways, Zodiac should be right about C’s alley. Have you subjected her to the Shaun of the dead trilogy yet?
The violence in Robocop, especially the Unrated Awesome Sauce version, can get rather gratuitous. How do you think she’ll handle the ED 209 board room scene. Or one of my personal favorites, the blood splash on Robocop’s chest when he stabs Clarence in the neck.
