Is that really the cover for Charlie Wilson's War?

Wow.

Lotsa good stuff this week.

I'll rent The Savages, Charlie Wilson, Cloverfield and The Orphanage on Blu-Ray, and might one day get to the Eclipse and Criterion.

I'll most definitely be buying Cloverfield.

I saw What Remains over two years ago at Sundance. I'm not surprised it's taken this long to come out, nor will I be revisiting it.

Really enjoyed looking at your Top11s blog. Just looking at your list for the sixties blows my mind. How can one decade contain so many amazing films?

From any standpoint, but especially looking at European auterism/art house cinema, the 60s is straight-up phenomenal. But if doing my Top 11s has shown me anything, it's that film has been pretty great throughout its history as long as you know where to look.

I want to buy Cloverfield, but at the same time, it seems like just the type of movie to receive a super-uber-ultimate-deluxe-edition in the relatively near future.

I'm guessing the Charlie WIlson's DVD is so awful, because the producers planned on loading it with its Oscar wins six months ago.

BUY:
Cloverfield (best film of 08 so far by a considerable margin)

RENT:
Charlie Wilson's War (to watch again)
The Savages
Starting Out in the Evening
Hannah Takes the Stairs
The Orphanage

WTF of the Week:
I don't know, that ridiculously retarded One Missed Call poster on the DVD cover of a ridiculously retarded movie?

Oh man, those Kihachiro Kawamoto puppet films sound awesome. I will definitely be checking those out.

I also want to see the Gumby Movie on DVD. I have this on VHS and it's really old.

Merrill's Marauders is a must for me. People really need to see Frank Langella's terrific performance in Starting Out in the Evening. My favorite from last year.

As much as I enjoyed Cloverfield, I don't think I'll get anything out of watching it on DVD.

Honestly, the movie won me over like a concert would. I dug the hype, I dug the mystery and the anticipation, I saw it with friends twice on big screens and had a blast. I doubt I'll ever see it ever again for the rest of my life.

I'd probably watch it on HBO or something. Otherwise I feel the same.
