The story about a mother who's baby got stolen and a journalist trying to find out the truth, Song Without a Name's biggest strength is it's oppressive atmosphere, not only brought by the bleak backdrop of an authoritarian and corrupt 80's Peru (we're often listening, either on the radio or TV, the Peruvian news full of crime and political intrigue), but visually augmented by it's B/W cinematography, heavily naturalistic writing and performances and emphasis on either wide shots reflecting how powerless our mother and journalist or close-ups reflecting their suffering and isolation. Ultimately an elegiac, naturalistic and fairly risky). Also, it would make a hell of a companion piece with Cuarón's Roma.
