Talk of Denis Lavant and Acapelli's av reminded me that I saw the trailer for this a few weeks back.

I don't think I'll ever like a Harmony Korine film, but the novelty factor this film promises is just so through-the-roof that I'll have to see it. Morton as Monroe? Lavant as Chaplin? Herzog directing nuns to skydive? I'm there.

That looks pretty dull and ham-fisted, but I suppose you're right about the novelty factor.

Seeing this Saturday...I've heard nothing but bad things which kind of excites me. I'm a pretty big Korine fan, but I am skeptical about this one, but with Werner Herzog acting again and David Blaine as the priest, there's no way this won't at least be interesting. I wish I didn't miss the screening of The Diary of Anne Frank II...I can't even find that on KG.

But it's ironically dull and ham-fisted!

Gah, Korine is such a hackysack'o'shite.

one of the funniest scenes in the film:

"dooon't die...dooon't die."

Everything about this film grows tiresome rather quickly: its concepts, its themes of spirituality and identity--even its sense of humor.

I found the film to be a cynical piece of shit, and it basically confirmed my suspicion that Harmony Korine doesn't care much for humanity.

This sort of confirms my fears, but I still plan on seeing it some day this week.

I didn't like the film that much, but I don't agree with this statement. This is obviously Korine's most autobiographical film yet. The universal themes of identity, alienation, and spirituality reflect his own personal experiences and struggles, but the film doesn't strike me as all that cynical. Compared with his past work, Mister Lonely is bubblegum and rainbows. I actually found it to be a fairly optimistic story of a confused man's reintegration into society after living in a fantasy world that turns out to be more nightmare than dream, not much unlike Korine's return after bouts with drugs in the last 8 years.

All the elements are in place for a unique, transcendent experience, but in the end Korine isn't quite able to pull it off. There are moments of wonder and magic, and I really like the contrast between the two groups of people attempting to find purpose in life through extreme action (one by immersing themselves in pop culture, the other by taking the ultimate leap of faith). Unfortunately, once the celebrity impersonators come together, too much of the film is spent treading water, waiting for 'the moment that changes everything'. Luna is great in the lead, but eventually his character just sort of blends into the crowd. Why have we been asked to take his perspective? It's unclear to me. I like the idea of the film much more than I do the execution. It grabbed my attention, but I don't really feel like it took me anywhere.

Ridiculous. Despite its flaws, this is a compassionate film and one that attempts to address human feelings of dissatisfaction and despair.

Hey, not every thread can have 15 posts a minute like The Dark Knight thread. I take what I can get.

Actually, I was referring mostly to his opinion schizophrenia. He currently lists the film as #5 in his 2008 top ten.

Well, that is curious.
