Maybe they see this year’s dearth of films and decide to use their awards to add fuel and reignite the Film vs TV debate again, bless ‘em. https://awardsworthy.org/images/smilies/smileys/lol.gif

And here's why I've been saying they should just combine 2020/2021 award shows. But the case I pointed out wasn't for a lack of films, they just didn't look for them (e.g. La Casa Lobo or a lot of anime films like A Whisker Away or Violet Evergarden).

But the case I pointed out wasn't for a lack of films, they just didn't look for them (e.g. La Casa Lobo or a lot of anime films like A Whisker Away or Violet Evergarden).
In my defense, I would have given Lupin III The First (or anything from GKIDS, really) a go if I weren't already super behind on screeners and just wanting to send a complete ballot by the deadline. Plus, I thought GKIDS was going to send screener links like they do every year, but they didn't. It was an odd omission.

Forgiven.
I am eternally grateful. :)
But yeah, I always try to review at least one GKIDS movie every year, so the fact we didn't get screeners from them this year was a big letdown for me. I'm worrying about how they're holding up during the pandemic.

Said it on twitter but:
-Never heard of Music / Mauritarian until today.
-Jared Leto is the most GG Pick in a while. I should've known better than to predict Paul Raci.
-Delroy Lindo needs to be Supporting Actor.
-HFPA patting itself on the back for nominating three women directors... Now watch them vote in Sorkin.
-The Foreign Language rule is so dumb.
Waiting for Gold Derby to update to see how I predicted. I know I got Drama Actress at 100%.

Because it's the Golden Globes.
SAG passed him over too. He's the lead of that movie, though. It's his emotional journey.
Paul Raci shoulda been there too.
Stunt nominations for the SAG are a joke:
Da 5 Bloods
Mulan
News of the World
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Wonder Woman 1984
Not sure how Tenet doesn't make that list. I haven't seen News of the World so I can't slander that pick, but there's no way a couple of riot scenes in Chicago 7 trumps basically everything that happens in Tenet. No Birds of Prey is a snub too.
D5B at least got the Ensemble Sag nom... good batch:

One Night in Miami
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Of course the zoom thing was always going to be pretty awkward, but I have to say the nominees did a fine job in general. One wonders if Sacha Baron Cohen would've been quite so bold and funny if he were on stage in front of everyone like normal. Jodie Foster was classic "I'm only here for attendance credit and the teacher actually called on me oh shit oh shit." And of course I geeked every time Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom were shown looking cute as hell.

Sacha is usually pretty funny in his standup bits.
It worked out as well as it could've. A lot of people gave shit to Sudeikis for looking high and wearing a hoodie, when in reality, it was 3-4 AM in England.
Winners were all over the place, and I expect that to stay the same for this year without the usual parties and weird scheduling.

Yeah, you're right. Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised he nailed it.
Andra Day is excellent in The US v. Billie Holiday, but I'm convinced she's going to miss out on an Oscar nom. Jodie Foster on the otherhand, nothing special in The Mauritanian and should miss out- but she's a past winner so who knows?!
Daniel Kaluuya in Judas is the only winning performance thats a lock for a nomination, imo. Boseman could get nominated twice for lead and supporting in Ma Rainey and D5B- or just one of those gets in. Hard to say, which makes it exciting!

Apparently they switched to a more jury-focused system this year, and it shows, because wow, not only are many frontrunners completely absent, but those in their place include some names and even films I have little to no awareness of! Genuinely cool to see!
EDIT: Even with all the unexpected nominees, seeing the sole nod for Da 5 Bloods be Clarke Peters (who, as far as I know, hasn't gotten any other individual accolades for this movie this season) over Lindo or Boseman is the most surprising and interesting.
Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian is a nice surprise, he was easily the best performance in the film.

Like others, I was giddy for the Vinterberg nomination. Would have liked to see Mikkelsen or Lindo get in over Boseman (who is excellent in MRBB, I'm just not sure I like the idea of posthumous nominations when these can help performers' careers) and Yeri Han not be ignored for a more internal role.
Bitter about The Assistant, The 40 Year Old Version and First Cow getting blanked.

Supporting noms for both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield is pretty weird. And Dick Johnson snub is most egregious to me.
EDIT: Oh, and despite its 10 nominations, Mank is almost guaranteed not to win best picture since it didn't get recognized for editing or screenplay. Last best picture winner without screenplay nom was Titanic, and before that The Sound of Music. Last best picture without editing nom was Birdman, and before that Ordinary People. I wonder if there's ever been a winner without nominations in both?
I bet Mank goes on a Fury Road-esque winning streak of technical awards before losing to Nomadland. Or possibly Minari? (In that case, get ready for the #oscarsokorean backlash!)

What was the point of extending the deadline if only like 3 movies from 2021 were nominated?
Feel like it was more of a way to delay the ceremony moreso than trying to get more movies in.
Plus, the studios didn't care anyway and pushed beyond the deadline, minus Judas and the Black Messiah.

Does it though? No directing Nom. And the best Ensemble doesn’t always win Best Picture.
Yeah, the Ensemble winner isn't as big of a boost as it's thought to be:
2019 - Parasite
2015 - Spotlight
2014 - Birdman
2013 - Argo
2011 - King's Speech
The favorite to win, Nomadland, wasn't ever going to be an Ensemble win.
I think this does tell us that Minari won't be winning Best Picture as it doesn't have any notable Best Pic winners, mostly due to being shoehorned into Foreign categories, but it probably needed the Ensemble here.

I think this was mainly my thought process. If Minari was going to have a shot then it needed to win this. Maybe "big boost" for Chicago 7 is overstating it, but ensemble means something to movies on the bubble in a weird year like this.
I think Minari could win BP if it gets Script, Score, and Yuh-jung.
Could see Nomadland take Director, Cinematography, and Editing.

It's Oscar time. Let's see if anything interesting happens.

Both screenplay awards fairly unexpected! Haven't seen The Father -- seems like a big win.

Seems like the stripped-down production allows speeches to go on for a while. Fine by me I guess. I prefer acting clips to these individualized "thank you"s from the presenters, though. Also, the Vinterbergs are a very handsome couple.
PYW's screenplay win is kind of expected (Trial a 2nd choice, which if won would threaten to have its Best Pic chance pretty high), The Father's one is a nice surprise though. Given the late surge from people watching and loving it right around the time of voting, wonder now if Hopkins will upset...

Since Soderbergh has apparently made an awards-wide decision of not cutting speeches off, I'm setting the over/under on Viola Davis' speech at 4min 30sec. That being said, the size of Carey Mulligan's dress screams confidence.

With apologies to those special humans who fully appreciate the editing/mixing dichotomy... combining into a simple "Best Sound" category was a good move by the Academy. A very deserving win from Sound of Metal. Also, Riz Ahmed is charming.

I can't tell if Questlove's post-speech record scratching/airhorns are tacky or hilarious or both. Waiting for a speech to end on a super sentimental note to know for sure.

Quoted for truth
The two leading wins are WILD (although Actress was already a 4-way race in which anyone sans Kirby could squeak it out by a margin), and the way the producer clearly structured the ceremony thinking it would end with a Boseman win.... lmao. I guess Soderberg wouldn't be asked back.

Hopkins winning was a shocker for me. As was Francis. I liked Questlove being the DJ. The show could have used a host this year.

+ Happy they actually let people talk. Many of the speeches were heartfelt, emotional, and well-done since they didn't see people raising flags or giving them a countdown. The opening tracking shot to start it off was a neat idea and something I thought they'd do more with throughout.
- Not having clips or really anything from the movies is a huge miss. Many, if not most, of the viewers have probably not seen these movies.
- No real "celebration" of these movies either.
+ I really liked the set and seating arrangement.
- The Memoriam felt like it was on fast-forward.
+ The "trivia" bit, most likely a written bit, was still a fun way to integrate people into doing something. I wish there was more.
+ Glenn Close doesn't give a fuck anymore about winning an Oscar... or she's just putting it all into this Sunset Blvd remake.
- Soderbergh made a "life savings" bet and it didn't hit... What a terrible mistake with a cut to an ending that was more awkward than the Moonlight win. For all we know, Hopkins doesn't even know he won yet. What a huge miss to end it on.

Baller.
What a cluster with the ending. I assumed it was over after Best Picture and turned it off. Only found out after the fact. What a faceplant for Soderbergh after what I found a genuinely charming work around in the age of COVID. That fuckin guy... Not sure if he can't catch a break or catches too many.

He was adamant that he would not be there from the beginning.
I'll need to fact check, but he was apparently willing to zoom from home and got declined. Show producers (maybe Soderbergh... who knows) wanted all people who couldn't make the show to take it from a theater or some spot with better production. I need to fact check that, but it makes sense since they all had actual cameras and no zooms.

That makes sense. I was looking forward to Soderbergh's take, but for the past few years Oscar time always finds me watching movies. The actual ceremony feels like a waste of time and I'll end up watching any good bits on social media anyway.
