This was phenomenal. The animation is flat-out breathtaking, I love the split screen techniques & aspect ratio changes that creatively tell its story and get into a character's headspace, the narrative is grand in scale and its high stakes are felt from beginning to end, and its messages about environmentalism rooted in Celtic folklore were as interesting as they are enlightening. It's in my top ten of this year for sure!

This was phenomenal. The animation is flat-out breathtaking, I love the split screen techniques & aspect ratio changes that creatively tell its story and get into a character's headspaceOh God, yes. The use of split screen reminded me a lot of the way Genndy Tartakovsky used it in Samurai Jack to compress time, and yes, get into the characters headspace, specially when it was used in conjuction to montage. It said a lot without uttering a single work.
And not only that, Moore and co used several variations in their animation style, for example, take into contrast how angular and clean the style seems in the village while in the forest round shapes are more prevalent and a bit unfinished... and when we enter wolf mode, *chef's kiss*

The narrative is grand in scale and its high stakes are felt from beginning to end, and its messages about environmentalism rooted in Celtic folklore were as interesting as they are enlightening. Not only feels grand in scale, but also feels intimate. There is a lot of time focused on Robyn and her dad and Robyn and Mebh (with even some queer subtext there!) and without it, the film wouldn't work nearly as well. Cartoon Saloon may be famous for it's animation, but they're no slouches at writing characters.

It's in my top ten of this year for sure!Yup. Best animated film of the year for sure and I don't think any of the ones I've yet to see will surpass it.

On a character level, this for me lacks the developed, intensely personal pull of the sibling relationship in Moore's former Song of the Sea, which has a grounding sorrowfulness throughout. But it compensates mightily, and even surpasses overall, on a world-building level, in which the grand sweep of its mythology is at such a thrilling epic scale. Combined with a big leap in Moore's visual style -- his geometrically precise curves and lines now taking on a full, dazzlingly expressionistic flight -- and the overall effect becomes truly staggering. The soaring artistry on display here helps heighten the story impact so much that some segments in the third act are just overwhelming beyond words; its continuously morphing compositions open an emotional throughline that bypasses straight to the senses. 8.5/10

Yeah, this is pretty awesome to watch for animation. Love the Miyazaki level of creativity with the Medieval folklore.

Would be curious if kids enjoyed this.
