Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

Is this art? Are the video recordings film?

It's the sort of thing that will be used by politicians to justify the denial of arts funding. That's the important part.

I doubt many pro-choice people will be getting behind this with any support either so it seems the entire point of this exhibition is attention which, with all the coverage this has gotten, has been a resounding success.

It's maybe relevant as a discussion on artist fame/infamy being more important in the art world than the actual work, but then, that's been pretty much the norm since art became a commodity... so maybe that fresh of a discussion anyways.

Either way, dumb. And why is she artificially inseminating? Wouldn't half the fun be that you can have unprotected sex without fear of pregnancy?

I'm not saying that all radical Yale performance artists are lesbians, but I don't think we should be shocked if this were the case.

Is Fox News on this? Oh, yes they are. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351608,00.html)

"It’s clearly depraved. I think the poor woman has got some major mental problems," said National Right to Life Committee President Wanda Franz. "She’s a serial killer. This is just a horrible thought."

...

Franz likened Shvarts' process of artificial insemination and induced miscarriages to the human experimentation that took place during the Holocaust. She said the Yale senior's work highlights a stark truth about American society's approach to abortion.

"She really has hit on a reality that what she has done is legal," Franz said. "Anything she chooses to do here can’t be stopped in terms of legality. And there are people fighting for her right to do this."

Serenity now. :|

Google tells me that Shvarts is Yiddish for black/dark.

So edgy and emo in a upper-middle class ivy league sort of way.

She trolled every blog/message board/media outlet in the world. As a performance art piece... well played or despicable whore for attention?

I'm thinking a little of both.

Yeah, I kind of had the feeling. I think now you can see the humor in what she has done, exposing the sensationalist nature of our modern media and demonstrating how fast stuff like this can blow up. I give her senior project an A-.
