View Full Version : Best Comeuppance in Film
Several times bac0n and I have discussed this topic, usually after a few adult beverages. The one that always leads the conversation is the one in Daimajin. Bac0n can do it better justice than I.
So, without further ado, what are some of the best examples of comeuppance in film?

The Warden from The Shawshank Redemption. Satisfying as hell.

I love this.
Jen and I are deliberating.
Some actual quotes...
Jen: How about that guy who got his dick shot off in RoboCop? Nah, that's not good enough...

Well, Clarence Bodicker getting stabbed in the neck, with blood splash on Robocop’s chest, and extra arterial spurts is better.

As long as you can do it before he sticks his foot up your ass...

Teenage Scar votes for Johnny Ringo in Tombstone.
Old cynical Scar prefers Little Bill Dagget in Unforgiven.

The Long Goodbye
Although that one is a little different because the satisfaction comes less from Lennox being killed - he's a monster but obviously doesn't have enough of a presence in the film for us to truly hate him - and more with seeing the typically cool and laid back Marlowe coldly shooting him dead after putting up with so much shit throughout the film. And then Marlowe dancing down the street is just icing on the cake.
As long as you can do it before he sticks his foot up your ass...
Jen and I have both been drinking.
The gin has been flowing in MN today.

Trying to think of comeuppance that does not involve death or injury makes the question much more difficult.
Pierce in "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" from Community.
Ben Affleck in Dazed and Confused.
Lotso in Toy Story 3

Unless it's a super painful death, I'm not sure that's good enough for me. I need like a long planned out conspiracy where all parties would go to jail for a very long time.
Something akin to the ending of the Negotiator.

Yeah I like that one because he does die, but its a short comeuppance. For me the comeuppance is more about being thoroughly bested by Andy than him dying or not. As Red said "I'd like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that bullet, was how the hell Andy Dufresne ever got the best of him."

This might be my favorite: The first time Doc Holliday (Victor Mature) meets Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) in "My Darling Clementine."
https://vimeo.com/261735278
Notice the way Mature's actions are all short and violent while Fonda, in contrast, barely moves. The look on their faces at the end, traded during different beats, is also priceless.
I love the way this scene establishes the character of Doc while demonstrating to the audience, in a dramatic and entertaining fashion, that Earp is waaaaaay smarter that we may have thought --- and that he's just as dangerous as Doc is, but in a different way.

That's a good one too because of how annoying that character is.
I like how in the original Ben shoots him when he finally gets tired of his bullshit. Then his own daughter eats him.
Then in the remake Barbara sees he is alive, is mad that he survived and shoots him.
Both are quite satisfying in their own ways.
My other pick would be Gary Oldman in The Professional.
