The movie is great when it dives into the low lives in Monterrey, Mexico, the Kolombia culture, the music and the struggles, both economic and of criminality. It's a dive that feels very authentic and there's a lot of love put into this part. It does lose a little steam once the story moves to New York, but not much, focusing into the isolation of this kid taken out of his land and culture. There is a little potential romantic storyline in the second half which is very cute at times, but ends very suddenly, reinforcing the feeling of loneliness of the character. Overall, this was a very good movie, probably the best Mexican movie not made by Cuaron, del Toro or Gonzalez Inarritu in years and I could see it making some noise come awards season.
