I live about an hour north of Boston, right at the mouth of the Merrimack river. Sometimes I go into the city; when I do, I usually take the train.

Is Boston as rough as movies make it out to be?

I know NYC is not nearly as bad as I expected - when I went the first time, I practically expected Gotham City.

I'm just wondering if, like my NYC experience, the portrayals of Boston are greatly exaggerated? Or is it actually quite crime-riddled and/or dangerous?

Ha! No. I think that there are a few rough neighborhoods, but on the whole, it's a safe city.

That's good to know, because I'd love to go there sometime.

Being an Irishman who can hold his liquor, I'm sure I'd fit in quite nicely :P

Places to visit:
Faneuil Hall
The MFA
Boston museum of science
the north end (our little Italy)
Harvard Square
and, obviously, the "freedom trail"

I love Boston. To me, it's a city that gets better the more you know it.

I assume Boston is just like any other big city. Go into the wrong neighborhood and it'll be miserable, but if you stay smart, you'll be fine.

Although Detroit doesn't really have much going for it.

No. I used to live in Northborough, just outside of Worcester. I miss it so much.

Bah. That's a myth. There are plenty of beautiful parts to Detroit. It's just that the bad parts are so bad, no one ever talks about them.

I for one would like to visit Boston one day. I'd rather go there than NYC....
